Gerontology Program: General Information

The Gerontology Program at Central Washington University is the only four-year undergraduate Gerontology major in the Pacific Northwest. An interdisciplinary program, Gerontology draws on the contributions of Sociology, Psychology, Biology, Family Studies, Health Education, and Leisure Studies to the understanding of aging in modern society.

Opportunities in the field of gerontology are developing rapidly with the increasing size of the older population. The Gerontology Program seeks to prepare students for careers in areas concerned with aging, such as, senior centers, retirement homes, nursing facilities, and related services. The program emphasizes responses to practical issues and culminates with an internship in a community organization serving an aging population. All of our students who have sought work in the field have found positions quickly, many at the management level, and sometimes even before graduation.
