About this course

Geography 305 serves as an introduction to the history, methods, and institutional context of land use planning in the United States.  The subject area of land use planning is complex and controversial.  The process and procedures of planning exhibit legal, environmental, social, economic, and political dimensions.  In this course you will learn about the fundamental concepts of private property rights and public control over land use, along with alternatives for implementing a land use plan in urban and rural settings.  You will understand local government decision-making structures, and also look at examples of statewide land use programs. The course concludes with a focus on the design and implementation of the typical Comprehensive Plan.
