Department of Geography: Braden-Dodd Memorial Fellowship in Resource Management

The Brooks-Shaw Award

Named after Reginald Shaw and James Brooks, two early and influential faculty members in the CWU Geography and Land Studies Department, these annual awards are given to select undergraduate students majoring in geography who demonstrate academic excellence and promise. The monetary award may be used by the student toward support of travel, field trips, membership in professional societies, purchase of books, and payment of tuition and fees.

Dr. Shaw, known for his research on the Columbia River, served CWU from 1935 to 1952 after completing his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Many of his students, including Dr. Brooks, went on to complete graduate work in geography. Dr. Brooks graduated from CWU in 1950. He was professor in the department from 1961 to 1994, and president of the university between 1961 and 1978.

The Brooks-Shaw Geography Endowment was established at Central Washington University to:
  1. encourage promising students to become Geography majors;
  2. recognize and promote scholarship by our majors;
  3. encourage promising scholars to pursue graduate degrees;
  4. promote and enhance the long established, mutually supportive, and collegial teaching/learning relationship among students and faculty.

Candidates for these awards are determined by faculty nomination among all members of the Geography and Land Studies Department. The awards committee along with the department chair will then make a final determination for granting one or more cash awards.
