Computer Support Position

Web Development Position

Thank you for talking with me today about the DRC's desire to re-design our web site to make it more interactive, user friendly and attractive. Here is a brief paragraph about our work and our goal for the web site. Our website can be found at www.drcyakima.org.

The Dispute Resolution Center of Yakima and Kittitas Counties is a not for profit organization which provides mediation, facilitation and other conflict resolution services and training to assist individuals, families, businesses and organizations resolve conflicts and disputes peacefully themselves. Our 35 mediators from throughout Yakima and Kittitas Counties donate their time to assist people to work through cases related to parenting plans, divorces, elder care needs, small claims court cases, landlord tenant matters, business/consumer disagreements, real estate transactions and workplace issues. Most are motivated by a desire to help people improve communication, build more peaceful families and communities and create more productive and efficient workplaces here in Central Washington. We also provide mediation and conflict resolution training services and workshops.

Our current web site has 10 pages in English and 3 in Spanish. At this point it is very static with few changes/updates made with any frequency. We have recently formed a social media committee within the organization and want to make the web site a hub of our networking efforts. We don't believe it meets that goal right now. We are looking for help to make the web site more attractive, interactive, more user friendly and more adaptable by DRC staff or volunteers to update the site from the point that it has been successfully redesigned forward. We are hoping that students interested in an internship for 1 credit during the spring quarter can help us make this vision a reality. We will be able to pay $10 per hour for this effort, up to the 40 or so hours required for the credit. Interested students can contact me here at the DRC office at 925-5123 or matt@drcyakima.org. Our office is in Yakima but this work would probably not require trips to Yakima with any frequency. We also have the beginnings of a Facebook page if interested students want to check that out in addition to our web site.

Thank you for sharing this opportunity with your students.

Sincerely Yours,
Matt Fairbank

Advising

Please stop by the computer science office and schedule advising for spring quarter.

Reminder

The beginning of the quarter is a good time for you to advise students with CS class accounts that storing anything but shortcuts on their desktop may significantly slow down their logon times. They should be using the U:\ drive mapping to their home directory for storing all other files, code, projects, etc.

The user profiles for our cs2k3 domain accounts are stored on a domain server, downloaded to the local PC at logon time, and changes to the user profile are normally uploaded to the server at logout time - if the user has not exceeded their disk quota. If the quota is exceeded as changes to the profile are being uploaded, the remainder of what was to be uploaded is lost, and the profile may become corrupted.
