HTML TIDY is a plug-in tool included with HTML-Kit designed to identify and automatically fix HTML syntax mistakes and clean up sloppy formatting into nicely indented layout. The program's author, Dave Raggett, has written an Introduction to Tidy you may find useful. TIDY is also available as a stand-alone application for Windows.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) provides several online validation services for free. Their easy-to-use HTML validation service allows you to upload files from your computer and have them validated for conformance to W3C's HTML recommendations. W3C's link checker uploads and checks documents for broken links and anchors. and their Cascading Style Sheet checker uploads and checks CSS files for errors.
In addition, The Web Development Group's (WDG) web authoring tools include HTML validator, CSS Check Up, and Link Valet. All three tools offer services similar to W3C's but have some useful accompanying documentation.
Note: HTML-Kit's Online tools (from Online tab or Actions menu) provides immediate access to various validator tools during an editing session.
For those of you using Internet Explorer on your home computer, the Web Accessibility Toolbar is an extremely useful free collection of tools for checking web site accessibility.
The Web Developer toolbar and Accessibility Extension provides a similar collection of free single page validation tools for the Firefox browser.
WebXACT is a free online service that lets you test single pages of web content for quality, accessibility, and privacy issues.
