MY WHOLE TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

    The Philosophy that I will implement in my physical education program has several aspects to it.  The most important being maximum participation of all students.  PE is/was developed to get in shape and to have fun at the same time, but those who choose not to participate in PE do not benefit from it.  For starters, you are not getting the physical activity the body needs and wants to remain healthy throughout ones life, secondly, you miss out on the social benefits when you don't participate.  Not interacting with people of the same age and same interests is not healthy in a child's life.
    The second portion of my teaching philosophy is to help students develop the fundamental skills of the activities introduced in class that will in turn help them later on in life.  By working with all the students to develop fundamental skills helps to assure maximum participation because all students will have tasks to complete.  By the end of each unit I hope to have developed enough of the fundamental skills to give students an opportunity to participate in school or non school sports if they so choose.
    I also believe in an equal opportunity environment for my classroom.  I believe the disabled student deserves every opportunity a non disabled student receives.  This is a big part of my teaching philosophy.  Recently, having gotten the opportunity to work in a boys home for developmentally disabled youth, it was very clear to me they deserve the same rights to have fun in PE as the non disabled student.  I think the children can work together and learn a lot through each other throughout the year.
    The final focus in my teaching philosophy is to help students develop and lead a healthy lifestyle that they will be able to carry on when they are no longer in school.  The idea of living a healthy lifestyle should interest everybody and encourage students to work hard in my class.  All students will be given equal opportunity in physical education.  Throughout the semester all students will put an emphasis on learning fundamental skills, living a healthy lifestyle, and maximum participation.

MY GRADING PHILOSOPHY

Attendance-

Students are expected to be in class and participate on a daily basis. Students will be allowed two excused absences for the quarter (athletics event, doctors appointment, sick w/ note) There will be an opportunity to make-up for unexcused absences if the student spends the amount of time they missed in class doing a physical activity for that amount of time outside of class. This does not include team sports or intramurals.

Dress-

Students are required to come to PE class dressed in appropriate clothing for that activity. If it is an indoor activity they are to be wearing shorts, sweats, warm-ups, t-shirts, sweatshirts. No cut offs, tank tops, halter tops, jeans. Students are required to have appropriate shoes for activity. No boots, sandals, slippers, dress shoes. Tennis shoes, running shoes are very important to have in ensuring that there are no injuries.

Participation-

Students are expected to participate in all daily activities. Those who choose not to participate in the daily activities will be marked as an unexcused absence. (Unless they have been excused from the activity, sick or injured)

Fitness Testing-

Students will be tested twice during the quarter on there fitness levels. This testing will take place during the first week of class and then again during the last week of class. The students will be expected to show an improvement on there scores from the first week, however this will not be held against them if there is no significant improvement.

Timed Runs-

The students will participate in a timed mile and a half once every week. The students will be assessed on there runs, and expected to improve there times from run to run. Hopefully showing a great improvement from the first week to the last week.

Daily Grades-

The students start the day with the chance of earning a total of 20 points. They also have the chance at getting zero points for the day.

Attendance = 5 points for showing up on time/ 3 points for showing up late/ zero points for no shows

Dress = 5 points for being dress appropriately/ 3 points for having partial dress requirements/ zero points for no dress down

Participation = 10 points possible for full participation - this is a judgement call by the teacher on participation points

Grading Breakdown

A = 100% - 90%

B = 89% - 80%

C = 79% - 70%

D = 69% - 60%

F = 59% -0%

There will be no +/- grades given out
