September's Event: The Welcome Back to School Punt/Pass/Kick Competition. This event will be sponsored and supervised by the physical education staff. This event will be held on September 25, 2003 @ 3:00pm on the Intramural Fields. In order for this event to take place we are going to need to reserve the Intramural Fields for that day as well as make sure we have enough equipment. We will need 15 footballs (5 for each station) 3 teachers, one to supervise each station, we will also need volunteers to help chase after the footballs that are being punted/passed/kicked. (12 volunteers, these could be students, parents, coaches, other teachers. We will have a sign-up sheet in the office) Each student will try to get the highest score by punting, passing, and kicking a football. A distance will be measured for how far you can punt a football, how accurate you are at throwing a football into a set-up target and how accurate you are at kicking a 25 yard field goal. Each participant will have 3 chances at each station to receive the most points. Points are awarded for distance in punting (= total distance), accuracy in throwing (20 points for each target hit, 0 for a miss), field goals made (20 for each one) Age groups will be divided by grade, and there will be a male and female winner in each category.
October’s Event: The Perfect Points Pumpkin Contest. This is a contest for each physical education class. For the student(s) that makes it all the way through the month of October with a perfect score in PE. That means perfect attendance, dressed down every day, and perfect participation points each day. If there is a student(s) who can achieve this, they will go home with a pumpkin.
November’s Event: Thanksgiving is our theme for this month and the event is the Turkey Day Dash, which really is a combination of both mental and physical strength. Throughout the whole month of November the students in PE class will be learning the muscles of the body and how to identify them. On November 25 the students will be partnered up (by their choice) and they will participate in a Turkey Day Dash. The event will start with each pair having to correctly identify 15 muscles on the body, (They must get them all right before they can move on) from here they will make their way through an obstacle course, and finish the Turkey Day Dash by putting together puzzle. The team with the fastest time will take home a turkey. The competition will be held at all grade levels (9-12) who are taking a physical education class.
December’s Event: December brings us a food drive event that will be sponsored by the physical education and health classes. The competition being to see which class can donate the most food. For the entire month of December starting on the 1st, students are welcome to bring in as much food to donate as they want, they are also free to ask for donations. On the 23rd of the month, each classes donations will be weighted to see who the winner is and then the whole donation will be made to the local Red-Cross and homeless shelter for those who need some holiday food. The winning class will have their picture in the local paper and acknowledged as a group for their contribution.
January’s Event: Our Snowy Nights Event night!!! This will be a show of presentations put on by our PE/Health classes. This is a presentation of projects done by students pertaining to health/fitness/nutrition issues that will be open to the families of the students, staff, and the public to view at the high school on the night of January 14th 2004 starting at 5:00pm and running until 9:00pm. This is something that will take a lot of planning and volunteer work. We will need to start planning for this event at the beginning of November. At this time we will see how many groups we will have presenting, determine their subjects, space needed and how many students are in each group. We will be asking for volunteers to help set-up, clean-up, bring drinks, snacks for everyone. This will be an informative night that will be open to all to enjoy. Come, learn about health and fitness.
February’s Event: Jump Rope for Heart Day will be held in the high school gymnasium from 10:00am to 2:00pm on February 13th. This is for the students in PE classes to raise money for the American Heart Association in recognition of February being heart month. Each student will spend the first part of the month of February getting donations for how long they will be jumping rope. All donations will be given to the AHA. Students who participate in this event will receive recognition on the school web site, as well as the local paper. Those students participating in PE classes at this time will be the ones expected to participate in this event, however it is open to all students who would like to help out. A sign-up sheet as well as a donation sheet will be available. We will need parent volunteers to help supervise this event. The PE department will supply the music and the jump ropes.
March’s Event: March brings us National Sportsmanship Day, the event being held this month is on March 7th 2004, being held in each physical education class at the high school. The event is Jog Across The State of Washington!!!! The idea being, that each student will spend the class period running, jogging, walking laps to try and go as far as they can in the allotted class time. With combing every student’s distance completed, we will have run across the state of Washington. There will be a map put up in each locker room, so that each student knows how big the state is and how far we will need to go as a collective group. The whole concept behind this idea is to build up team spirit and camaraderie. From Olympia, WA to Spokane, WA it is a total distance of 320.7 miles. This is the distance that we will try to exceed. As each class posts total distances, the distance will be marked off on the map in each locker room so the students know where we are at and what we have left.
April’s Event: Kick Butts Day is April 3 2004 12:00pm – 2:00pm the sophomore class will be putting on an Anti-Tobacco Track Meet for the freshmen class. The theme for this month is Drug Awareness. There will be events such as the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400, the tar ball throw (shot put), age jump (long jump) Each event will be classified with an effect smoking has on our bodies. This event is being put on in hopes of showing the freshmen the negative effects smoking has on our bodies, while also showing them the importance of having physical activity in our daily lives. The event is open to all freshmen students, and is put on by the sophomore class. Parent involvement is encouraged. We will need volunteers to host the event and supervise the events(s). Planning for this event will need to start in the beginning of February. A sign-up sheet for volunteering will be made available as well as a newsletter for parents being sent home with their students.
May’s Event: In celebration of this month being PE/Sport month, we will be participating in a school wide celebration of Project ACES. This event will take place at 10:00am on May 5th 2004. Starting at 10:00am the gymnasium will be open to all those who wish to participate in this event, all classes are welcome and encouraged to come participate. The event will last 20 minutes. The idea behind Project ACES is to get every one exercising at the same time on that same day. The teachers and students will be notified of the event 2 weeks prior to the date of the event. Again, everyone is invited, the gym will be open to all staff and students who wish to partake in this event. From 10:00am – 10:20am on May 5th 2004. During this time students can jump rope, juggle, dance, and participate in many other healthy activities. Please, come join the fun!
