Faculty Senate: 2001-02 Salary Administration Report

Report of the 2001-02
Salary Administration Board
Salary Distribution Process

By

Michael Braunstein, Chair, Faculty Senate
Mark Lundgren, Director, Institutional Research

November 1, 2002

The Salary Administration Board, under a charge from the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, developed three proposals for distributing approximately $100,000 to the faculty salary base. The proposals were presented to the Faculty Senate. After considerable discussion among faculty and senators, at a meeting subsequent to the presentation, the Faculty Senate passed a resolution in support of one of the plans. That plan was implemented as written.

The distribution was performed in the following manner: salary adjustments were available only to tenured and tenure-track faculty; the criteria used to determine eligibility of each tenured and tenure-track faculty member for salary adjustment were awarded of either Merit Level II or a promotion at least once during the previous two merit/promotion cycles, AND a salary below the CUPA mean for rank and discipline; Mark Lundgren, Director of Institutional Research, performed the analysis; deans administrative assistants verified the merit/promotion status of faculty members; each salary award was one step on the salary scale.

The process had the following results: 200 Faculty members received salary adjustments with a total distribution to salaries of $108,300; additional resources were applied to cover the benefits associated with the $108 K salary distribution; the average salary increase for those who received adjustments was $540.

There were at least two unresolved issues that arose from the process: first, the Information Technology and Administrative Management department has no clear comparison in the CUPA groupings - the salary comparison used for this process was the CUPA university mean by rank; second, very productive new faculty members whose salaries were below the CUPA mean by rank and discipline, but who had not yet had an opportunity to participate in merit/promotion cycles were excluded from the process.
