MacBasics Scavenger Hunt

Directions: You can print out this page and use it with the Powerpoint tutorial program called "Intro to Macs".

Using the Mouse

1. What are the three essential skills of using the mouse?_pointing, clicking, dragging

2. How do you DRAG using the mouse?  You hold down the button as you move the mouse.

The Desktop
3. In the Macintosh system, what is like a file drawer or cabinet? The Hard Disk(HD)
 

4. Where do you put things you don't want anymore? In the trash.

5. When you turn on your computer screen, what do you see? (Hint, it is ready for you to use) The Desktop

6. ICONS represent tools that you use as you work.

7. The hard disk stores your work and software programs. It also contains programs your Mac uses to operate your computer (system software).

8. What is the main difference between a FLOPPY disk and the HARD Disk?
    A hard disk can store more information that a floppy disk.

9. Why do they call the Menus on the Mac "Pull-down" menus?
    Because the menus remain hidden until you click on them or drag through them.

10. What commands are under the FILE menu?

____New folder, Open, Print, Close Window, Get Info, Sharing, Duplicate, Make Alias, Put Away, Find, Find Again._

Creating a Document

11. What is the icon for the Hard Disk? Draw it.

It is a rectangle.

12. What are the steps in OPENING the Hard Disk?

  1. Click the Hard Disk (HD) icon. The HD is now selected.

13. What does the TITLE Bar display?

14. What are the steps in opening Microsoft Word?
Select the program, and double click on it.  Choose "New" to get a new document.
 
 

15. The window called "UNTITLED" or "Document 1" is like a blank piece of paper.

16. WHY do you save your document on a disk? (floppy or hard disk)

So you don't lose it when you turn off your computer or the computer crashes or freezes.
 
 

17.HOW do you SAVE your document on a disk?

You have to give it a name and tell the computer where to store it.


 

18. What appears when you choose SAVE?

a.  Go to the file menu title
b.  Click and hold down the mouse's button
c.  Drag through the commands until you reach QUIT

Working with More than 1 Program

Copying and Pasting from One Document to Another

23. What do you do first when you want to copy something from Word?

Open the document by double clicking it.

24. After you open Word, next you should highlight the text you want to move to your web page.
 

25. After you highlight the text, go to EDIT and choose the COPY command.

26. To paste, open up the Simple Text program. Open a _NEW  document. Put your cursor where you want the text copied and go the EDIT menu and choose PASTE.

27. When you copy something, it is put into a space in the computer's memory called the

clipboard.

28. How do you pull down the Application menu?

1. Move the pointer to the application menu icon.
2.  Press and hold down the button.

29. How can you tell which program is active? It has a check next to it.

30. If there are no programs runnning what will you see? _the icon for the finder.

31. What does the FINDER do?

1. Displays the desktop
2. Manages the items on the Hard Disk.

32. What are the 2 steps in Choosing the Finder program from the Application menu?

1.Pull down the Application Menu

2. Choose Finder from the list of programs.

33. What does the pointer turn into while your work is being saved?
        a wristwatch

34. When your work has been saved, the pointer will reappear.

Filing Your Work

35. You can keep related documents together in a folder.

36. A Mac folder is like a regular file folder. You can put one or more documents inside it.

37. What are the steps in creating a new folder?

1. Pull down the file menu.

2. Choose  "new folder" from the list of commands

38. How do you name a new folder? You start typing because the name is already highlighted.

39. How do you put a document in a folder?
You can drag it into it

40. When there is more than one window open on your desktop, the ACTIVE window has lines in its title bar.

41. How do you bring a partially hidden window to the front so you can work with it?
You click on it.
 

42. What command in the File Menu closes the active window?  Close or close window.

43. What is the faster way to close a window? Click on the close box.

More about the Desktop

44. What is the shorter, easier way of opening an ICON? Double click on it.

45. What is a SCROLL BAR? A bar at the bottom or the side of a window.

46. Inside the scroll bar is a box that looks like a square. It is called a scroll box..

47. What is resizing a window mean? It means to make the window bigger or smaller.

48. There are three ways to make the hidden contents of a window visible. What are they?

Dragging on the scroll box

Clicking on the scroll arrow

Resizing the window

49. How can you retrieve (get back) documents from the trash?

Open the trash by double clicking on it.

Highlight the document and drag them onto the desktop.
 

50. Where can you get help while you're using the computer?

The help menu.

51. What is a balloon?  A message from the computer telling you what something is.

52. What command in the SPECIAL menu do you use to empty the trash? Empty Trash

53. How do you take a floppy disk out of the computer? You drag it into the trash.
