There's a reason the 1st Amendment is first. The founding fathers realized that these five freedoms - of speech, religion, press, assembly and petition - are the foundation of a free, open and tolerant society. In the 215 years since it was ratified in 1791, the amendment has grown to include the freedom of expression in nearly all its forms, from artistic expression to advertising. To this day, it remains controversial, as lawmakers and the public debate whether citizens really should have the right to burn a flag in protest, or whether professors' freedom of expression extends to the classroom.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Central Washington University will celebrate the rights granted by the First Amendment with ongoing events designed to enlighten and entertain. These events will collectively be known as the First Amendment Festival.

Join Central Washington University this year as we explore these issues and learn how to responsibly exercise these freedoms!
