Career and Technical Education Teacher Preparation ProgramBuilding BlocksTo be a successful career and technical education teacher you will need to build a strong foundation in teaching methods, classroom management, assessment, leadership and educational technology. Central Washington University's Competency Block Certificate Program provides you with the tools necessary to build this foundation. While you are enrolled in the Competency Block Certificate Program, coursework, assignments, and the mentored teaching experience will be the blocks with which you will build your teaching foundation. The Competency Block Certificate Program was the first career and technical education program to be approved by The Washington State Board of Education. Enroll now! Your future is Central. Program BenefitsThe Competency Block Program is a variable-credit program. This means that you register only for the credits that you need to fulfill your individual certification requirements. If you are just beginning the program, you will register for a full credit load (12 credits). However, if you have completed coursework from another institution that you wish to have recognized by CWU, you must submit official transcripts and a course description or syllabus with your registration. The program offers many benefits to its students.
Program DescriptionIf you are a business or industry professional who is seeking a teaching certificate in career and technical education, the Competency Block Certificate Program is designed for you. During this two-year program you will complete two courses, Competency Block 1 and Competency Block 2, which will provide you with the tools necessary for success in the classroom. During the program you will also complete a mentored teaching experience or practicum each year, which will allow you to apply what you are learning in an actual classroom setting. For Those With Education Degrees and Washington State Teaching CredentialsIf you have your Education degree and a Washington State teaching certificate, submit copies of the certificate and relevant official transcripts for review. Central Washington University's Competency Block Program may accept up to three classes from your Education degree. How to RegisterIf you have a Probationary Certificate, complete the attached registration form, attach a copy of the certificate and submit with your tuition and fees. If you don't have a Probationary Certificate, in addition to completing and submitting the attached registration form with your tuition and fees, you must verify that:

The deadline for registration is October 19, 2009; however, for late hires, contact the Career and Technical Education office. Admission may be available by permission of the instructor. Payment PolicyTuition rate for 2009/10 has been set at $183.90 per credit up to $1,839.00. Tuition and fees are due at the time of registration. CWU accepts the following forms of payment:
If paying with a purchase order, tuition and fees are due by November 20, 2009 or you will be accessed a late fee of $50. If payment has not be received by January 8, an additional late fee of $75 will be assessed. Cancellation & Refund PolicyYou may change or cancel your registration at no charge before November 20, 2009. If you withdraw after November 20, you will forfeit 50 percent of your tuition and program fee. No refunds will be offered after January 8, 2010. 2009-2010 Proposed Academic ScheduleClasses meet one Saturday a month at each of the regional centers located in Renton, Stanwood, Kennewick and Wenatchee. The program starts with an orientation, then includes nine class sessions over the following nine months. Classes are held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and attendance is required. Orientation is required if you are registering in Competency Block 1, or are new to the program and registering in Competency Block 2. The following schedule is subject to change.
