Sustainability

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". The intended goal of CWU is to "prepare students for responsible citizenship, responsible stewardship of the earth, and enlightened and productive lives". Sustainability as an ideology is constantly evolving and Central Washington University strives to ensure their role towards environmental change is positive and effective.

Central Washington University is sustainable by:

  • Promoting carbon reduction
  • Continuing energy conservation and efficiency efforts
  • Reducing transportation related emissions
  • Recycling and waste minimization
  • Designing a liveable and walkable community
  • Planting native landscapes
  • Constructing and renovating structures that are "Green"
  • Maintaining a high ratio of open and vegetated property
  • Developing environmentally focused majors and curriculum
