Course Content/Description:
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds. Organic compounds are central to life and are contained in all living organisms. Organic chemistry has a central role in medicine, bioengineering, and many other disciplines. The Chemistry 361/362/363 sequence serves as an introduction to organic chemistry for students building careers in the sciences. The material in Chemistry 363 builds on the material learned in Chemistry 361 and 362. This material will be important in other courses in chemistry such as biochemistry, spectroscopy, and medicinal chemistry. The full sequence (361/362/363) is strongly recommended for students planning on pursuing professional degrees in the medical field. This course is offered via interactive television. The lectures will originate at the CWU-Ellensburg campus.

Grading Scheme:
Course value: 370 points
Exams are closed-book and will be based on lecture material, assigned problems, and text reading. Exams will be given according to the schedule noted below. There will be no make-up exams given except in case of extreme emergency. In this case, make-up exams must be scheduled in advance whenever possible. Otherwise a missed test receives a score of 0 points. No early or late final exams will be given. The comprehensive ACS Organic Chemistry Exam will cover material from the entire 361/362/363 sequence.
The final letter grade will be based on the percentage of the total 370 points that you earn. The approximate grade breakdown is given bellow. These breaks may shift when significant gaps in the grade plot occur.

Study:
Learning organic chemistry requires you to develop disciplined study habits. To do well in this class you must study regularly and intensively. There is a lot of material to be covered during this quarter; therefore, it requires a large time commitment from you. I suggest that to do well in this class it will be necessary for you to study each and every day. Organic chemistry is detailed and extensive. There is a lot of detail to master, much like the vocabulary in a new language which is best grasped by relating new words to ones you already know. Study each chapter before as well as after it is discussed in lecture. Organic chemistry is relentlessly cumulative and intensely interrelated. If you fall behind catching up is very difficult.
Homework Problems:
Doing a lot of homework problems is your key to success in this course. Problems are important both as practice and as a self-test of your grasp of the material. Working the problems does not mean looking up the answers in the Study Guide. Use the Study Guide sparingly. Assigned homework problems for each chapter are provided bellow. If you study regularly, do a lot of problems, and think about organic chemistry you will have a solid understanding of the material.
If you are confused seek help. See me (office hours above) so I can help clear up problems. See me early in the quarter, while there is enough time left for you to recover.
