Message from the Director (the one wearing the hat!)

Welcome to the Environmental Studies Program! We are excited to announce that on July 21, 2008, the Higher Education Coordinating Board of Washington approved the new Bachelors of Science (B.S.) degree in Environmental Studies at CWU (view the HEC Board resolution here). The new B.S. degree will offer students a number of specialization options in environmental biology, environmental chemistry, environmental geology, physical geology, and water and air quality. A specialization in the social sciences is likely to be added in the near future. The B.S. degree requirements at CWU can be viewed here.

Environmental studies faculty will also be working in 2008 to create a new "Center for the Environment" that will 1) coordinate research and outreach initiatives in environmental science, environmental education, and resource management; 2) serve as a local and regional resource for individuals or groups with environmental questions (e.g. water quality and use, habitat conservation, riparian ecology); 3) foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations between students and faculty with research and career interests in environmental fields.

The Environmental Studies Program is an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort with participation from many departments at CWU including Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Geology, and Mathematics. Our vision is to make Environmental Studies at CWU one of the best programs in the country. We are very excited about what the future holds!
