She lay there
Somewhere between two worlds
Struggling to hold on
Ready to let go.
Labored and painful breathing
Remnant of her life
Consumed the cold white walls
And all within.
The cancer had ravaged
Her frail bones.
Every attempt to
Counter the vicious attack
Had failed. Leaving only
An empty shell
A body that was once
A vivacious spirit.
In the room
Around the bed
Her life's work.
Imprinted on each
Her red-headed stubbornness.
And an uncensored mouth
Which, on more than one occasion
Was known to get her into trouble.
And unrelenting passion
To see her children
And grandchildren
Finding their way.
A lifetime of sacrifices
To provide for her kids.
Few moments of peace
But no bitterness.
Her dreams fulfilled
Through the breaths of her children.
A last raspy breath
Then quietness.
She left to reap rewards
Of another kingdom.
No comfort
But in silence.
