M.A. in English: TESOL

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The M.A. in English: TESOL is a one-year program that fosters the awareness, understanding, and skills necessary for effective teaching of English to speakers of other languages. It prepares you to become educators who work with adult language learners, both in the United States and abroad, by study in language, pedagogy, and culture. Graduates from this program would be qualified to work in American colleges and universities, private ESOL institutes, and programs and schools abroad that provide instruction in English. If you are already certified to teach in Washington public schools, you may also receive endorsement in TESOL, with some additional work.

  • The program consists of 45 credits and offers both a thesis and a non-thesis option. Both options require 32 credits of core coursework. The thesis option requires you to complete 7 workshop/practicum (ENG 591/592) credits and 6 thesis (ENG 700) credits, write a thesis, and pass a one-hour oral examination over the thesis. The non-thesis option requires you to complete 9 workshop/practicum (ENG 591/592) credits, take 4 credits of individual study (ENG 596), and submit a superior or pedagogical paper.
  • Pre- or co-requisites to completion of the program include an introductory linguistics course and intermediate-high proficiency in a foreign language. The language proficiency requirement may be met in one of three ways: a) 30 quarter credits of college courses in a foreign language with a minimum 3.0 GPA in those courses, b) intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, or c) intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test.

Plan of Study

The TESOL curriculum is designed to be completed sequentially in 3-4 quarters. The time required for completion of the program will depend upon whether the student chooses the thesis or non-thesis option and whether or not the student holds an assistantship or must fulfill any pre-requisites. Within the thesis and non-thesis option there are two course plans:

  • Plan A is for students who do not hold an assistantship and who do have pre-requisites to fulfill. Plan A can generally be completed in 3 quarters.

  • Plan B is for students who hold an assistantship or who have pre-requisites to fulfill. Plan B normally requires 4 quarters to complete.
