English Graduate Admission Requirements

Thank you for your interest in applying to the English graduate program. You can get an informational brochure on graduate studies at CWU and all the application forms from the Graduate Studies & Research website.

On the Graduate Studies Forms & Guidelines page, you'll find an application for graduate admission, recommendation for graduate studies (you'll need three of these forms), and an assistantship application form. These completed forms and your test scores should be submitted directly to the Office of Graduate Studies.

If you prefer to receive an application packet by mail, fill out the Office of Admissions Application Request Form online.

You'll see on the Application for Graduate Admission that, in addition to the application form, you must submit:

  • $50 nonrefundable application fee (The application cannot be processed without the fee.)
  • A statement of educational and professional objectives (Please do not hand write, 500 words or less.) Include your name and program on your statement.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (Must be in envelopes prepared and sealed by the issuing institution's registrar's office.)
  • Three letters of recommendation (Confidential recommendations must be received in sealed envelopes, signed across the seal by the recommender.)

In addition to the University regulations concerning admission to graduate degree programs, there are special admission requirements for both M.A. in English programs:

M.A. in English (Literature)

Students applying to the M.A. in English (Literature) program must submit a writing sample of 5–10 pages directly to the Department of English. The writing sample must include the student's name, birth date, and Student ID number for identification. The GRE general test is also required for applicants to the M.A. in English (Literature) program.

M.A. in English (TESOL)

Pre- or co-requisites to completion of the M.A. in English (TESOL) program include an introductory linguistics course and intermediate-high proficiency in a foreign language. Students can be admitted to the program without this background, but they will be required to gain this background while enrolled in the program. Students who do not have the pre-requisites are strongly advised to complete the program over a two-year period due to the challenging workload.

The language proficiency requirement may be met in one of three ways:

  • 30 quarter credits of college courses in a foreign language with a minimum 3.0 GPA in those courses,
  • intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, or
  • intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of one of the following:

  • minimum TOEFL score of 580 paper-based (237 computer-based), or
  • baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university.

If the applicant's native language is English, scores for the GRE general test are required.

All applicants for assistantships must submit a writing sample of 5-10 pages directly to the Department of English. The writing sample must include the student's name, birth date, and Student ID number for identification.
