Learner Outcomes


To give students hands-on experience involving the functions of the school.

Students will observe various methods of classroom management and discipline – an analysis of behavior management of each cooperating teacher.

To give students the opportunity to put theory into practice by learning and using established teaching methods.

Provide a year-long (school-mentor-student) association in an educational environment.

Continue the development and growth between the university and schools of the Kittitas Valley utilizing the yearlong program.

  • ➢ A hands-on, practical, learning experience in preparation for the education field.
  • ➢ Students are to observe teaching styles and reflect on their observations.
  • ➢ Students may do research to strengthen the focus of the school/classroom.
  • ➢ Students assist teachers with classroom prep, lessons, classroom functioning.
  • ➢ Students assist teachers in the child’s learning by working 1-on-1 or in groups.
  • ➢ Students will give (mini) presentations and lessons.
  • ➢ Students are to learn/be involved with the “everyday” functions of the school.
  • ➢ Students are to be professional interacting with staff, students, and parents.
  • ➢ Students facilitate growth/learning in the school community under supervision.
  • ➢ Students may be rotated between/into 2 to 3 classrooms during the quarter.
  • ➢ Students should participate in extra-curricular activities.

Student & Teacher Guidelines


  • Students should/will:
    • Follow the learner outcomes of the EDCS 392/492 practicum.
    • Observe and learn school functions and procedures.
    • Observe and submit the school’s culture.
    • Observe classroom procedures.
    • Observe cooperating teacher’s classroom management style.
    • Write an analysis of the teacher’s management/discipline procedures.
    • Prepare lesson plans for lessons and give presentations
    • Keep a daily reflective journal.
    • Attend school or district meetings.
    • Attend university meetings and seminars.
    • Notify the cooperating teacher and their supervisor of any absences.
    • Prepare and submit a professional portfolio.
  • Students can:
    • Assist the cooperating teacher with the operation of the class.
    • Work with students – one-on-one, small groups.
    • Provide research and be a resource for the classroom/school’s focus.
    • Assist the teacher with parents/aides in student's educational experience.
    • Rotate to observe and/or work with teachers in other grades/subjects.
    • Assist in field trips, testing, and other class/school functions.
  • Cooperating teachers:
    • Assist students during pre-autumn, practicum, & student teaching.
    • Recognize and be cognizant of practicum and student teacher requirements.
    • Allow practicum students to help develop classroom materials and activities.
    • Make evaluation(s) of practicum students and/or student teachers.
