Reading Program : Reading Faculty |
Sharel BabcockSharel Babcock is an alumnus of Washington State University with degrees in elementary and secondary education and is also a reading specialist. She was a supervisor of student teachers in the Department of Curriculum and Supervision for eight years and has been teaching for the Reading Department for the last five years. She has lived in Ellensburg for twenty-six years and has a daughter and grandson living here as well. Judy BacklundJudy Backlund is currently an instructor in the Reading Department. She holds a Masters in Reading with a Reading Specialist endorsement. She also holds a valid Washington State Professional Teaching Certificate, K-8, with endorsements to teach speech and reading, K-12. After several years as a teacher and Reading Specialist, K-5, she taught language arts to second language learners and freshman English to struggling high school students before coming back to Central. For a number of years Judy has taught, and continues to teach, summer classes at CWU; specifically Creative Teaching and Educational Learning Games. In her free time, Judy enjoys being a wife, mother of three sons, and a grandmother to two granddaughters. She loves to travel the country and world with her husband. Two years ago she taught in China. Being with family, supporting struggling learners, and learning new things are her passion. Carol ButterfieldCarol L. Butterfield, professor, teaches literacy courses within the Elementary, Reading and TESL programs. She has been a literacy learner, teacher, and parent for 25 years. With three university degrees in Reading, Carol has taught P-12, ESL vocational and university courses in Alaska, Arizona and Washington states. Carol received her doctorate in Language, Reading and Culture from the University of Arizona. Susan DonahoeSusan Donahoe teaches teacher preparation courses at Central Washington University. She attended Winthrop University, Penn State University, and the University of New Mexico where she received a Ph.D. in Reading and Art Education in 1985. She has traveled extensively including Canada, Mexico, Japan, Puerto Rico, China, and Australia. She has two children and four grandchildren. She is an active artist with work to be shown in Seattle this summer and has been a state leader (Co-President) of the Washington Art Education Association and an advocate for faculty as President of the United Faculty of Central, the union for professors.
