students for our Summer 2010 program to complete and submit the

All courses needed to complete the requirements to qualify for
a Library Media endorsement to the teaching certificate will be offered
summer quarters. Individuals completing this 27-credit program will
have met the minimum initial level of preparation necessary to direct a
learning resources (library media) center in a K-12 school.
FIRST SUMMER STUDENTS
Students beginning their endorsement program must complete these four
classes (all course registrations are by permission only):
Selecting Literature for Children and
Young Adults (3)
MTWRF 9:00AM-NOON
The nature of literature for children and young
adults, how to develop a literature collection, and how to promote it.
Media Development (3)
MTWRF 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Introduction to design and production of
various instructional materials from manual to more complex computer
techniques.
Instructional Methods for Library Media
(3)
MTWRF 9:00 AM-NOON
Instructional methods used by library media
specialists in their work, e.g., independent learning skills, literacy
appreciation, visual literacy, reading motivation, creative drama,
puppetry, storytelling, authoring software, presentation skills, etc.
Collection Development/Library Media (3)
MTWRF 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Principles of developing a school learning
resources collection, including both print and nonprint materials.
Topics to be included are development of a materials selection policy,
intellectual freedom issues, selection tools, and appropriate tools and
strategies in the selection process.
SECOND SUMMER STUDENTS
Students who have completed the first four initial classes
must complete these four classes (all course registrations are by
permission only):
Advanced Media Utilization (3)
MTWRF 9:00 AM-NOON
Explores recent research, experimental programs
and new developments in the utilization of media. Students will gain
hands-on experience in using technology for library media.
Information Storage and Retrieval (3)
MTWRF 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Reference tools, information sources, and the
use of the Internet and other databases for the retrieval of
information on all forms of media will be explored as well as the
principles of storing and circulating materials, including computerized
circulation systems.
Cataloging and Classification for
Library Media (3)
MTWRF 9:00 AM-NOON
Principles and techniques of cataloging,
classifying, and assigning subject headings to books and other media;
including automation sources and requirements with an emphasis on the
preparation of the MARC record.
Administration of Media / Technology
Programs (3)
MTWRF 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Develop skills and expertise needed to manage
media/technology programs, including managing budgets and personnel;
evaluating, writing specifications for, and ordering software and
equipment.
