Library Media Endorsement

We are now accepting reservation forms for our Summer 2008 program. Please note that our Summer 2007 program was full by March 05, 2007, so we encourage all prospective students for our Summer 2008 program to complete and submit the reservation form as soon as possible. The reservation form and application information can be found in the MS Word document below.

2008 Library Media Endorsement Brochure (Revised 06/05/08)

All courses needed to complete the requirements to qualify for a Library Media endorsement to the teaching certificate will be offered summer quarters. Individuals completing this 27-credit program will have met the minimum initial level of preparation necessary to direct a learning resources (library media) center in a K-12 school.


Tentative Summer 2008 Schedule

FIRST SUMMER STUDENTS
Students beginning their endorsement program must complete these four classes (all course registrations are by permission only):

JULY 7-18, 2008

EDCS 536

Selecting Literature for Children and Young Adults (3)
MTWRF 9:00AM-NOON

The nature of literature for children and young adults, how to develop a literature collection, and how to promote it.

EDCS 514

Media Development (3)
MTWRF 1:00PM-4:00PM

Introduction to design and production of various instructional materials from manual to more complex computer techniques.

JULY 21-August 1, 2008

EDCS 526

Instructional Methods for Library Media (3)
MTWRF 9:00AM-NOON

Instructional methods used by library media specialists in their work, e.g., independent learning skills, literacy appreciation, visual literacy, reading motivation, creative drama, puppetry, storytelling, authoring software, presentation skills, etc.

EDCS 548

Collection Development/Library Media (3)
MTWRF 1:00PM-4:00PM

Principles of developing a school learning resources collection, including both print and nonprint materials. Topics to be included are development of a materials selection policy, intellectual freedom issues, selection tools, and appropriate tools and strategies in the selection process.


NOTE: Between the first and second summers, all first summer students are expected to complete a 3-credit 90-hour practicum. This course is listed as EDCS 599, Seminar and will be listed on your first summer schedule.


SECOND SUMMER STUDENTS

EDCS 516

Advanced Media Utilization (3)
MTWRF 9:00AM-NOON

Explores recent research, experimental programs and new developments in the utilization of media. Students will gain hands-on experience in using technology for library media.

EDCS 568

Information Storage and Retrieval (3)
MTWRF 1:00PM-4:00PM

Reference tools, inforamtion sources, and the use of the Internet and other databases for the retrieval of information on all forms of media will be explored as well as the principles of storing and circulating materials, including computerized circulation systems.

JULY 21-August 1, 2008

Cataloging and Classification for Library Media (3)
MTWRF 9:00AM-NOON

Principles and techniques of cataloging, classifying, and assigning subject headings to books and other media; including automation sources and requirements with an emphasis on the preparation of the MARC record.

EDCS 578

Administration of Media / Technology Programs (3)
MTWRF 1:00PM-4:00PM

Develop skills and expertise needed to manage media/technology programs, including managing budgets and personnel; evaluating, writing specifications for, and ordering software and equipment.
