About Labels
A label is descriptive or identifying text that can be applied to LiveText documents or reviews. LiveText has three types of labels.
Types of Labels in LiveText
| Type |
Description
|
Label |
A user-created label. Users apply the label and remove the label to organize documents and reviews. |
Smart Label |
A user-created label. Users specify criteria for the smart label. These criteria determine which documents have the smart label automatically applied to them. Smart labels only work with documents; smart labels do not work with reviews. |
System Label |
A LiveText-created, special purpose label that is always present and cannot be changed. The system labels and their purpose are covered later in this document. |
Usage
Use labels to organize LiveText documents and reviews. When in the Materials area, click a label's title to view the documents to which that label has been applied. When in the Reviews area, select a label from the Filter by label menu to view the documents to which that label has been applied.
Example: You can create a label named "BUS 206" and apply that label to all documents that are related to the Business 206 course. You can then click the BUS 206 label whenever you wish to list all of the Business 206 documents.
Example: You can create a smart label named "Summer I 2006" and specify the criteria as "created after June 30, 2006" and "created before August 1, 2006". The label "Summer I 2006" will automatically be applied to any document created in July 2006.
Note
- One label or smart label can be applied to an unlimited number of documents or reviews
- Any number of labels can be applied to one document or review
- Smart labels do not work with reviews

The listing of labels and smart labels displayed can be sorted by title, description, hidden, type, created, or modified.

Creating Smart Labels
Remember that a smart label is a user-created label. Users specify criteria for a smart label and these criteria determine which documents have the smart label automatically applied to them.
To create a smart label
- From the Label Manager, click the Create button
- Select Smart Label
- Enter a title. The description is optional
- Select whether to match all conditions or any conditions
- Using the left field, select a condition to match. The available conditions are Title, Author, Label, Document Type, Created, and Modified
- Using the middle field, select a qualifier. The available qualifiers vary by condition
- Using the right field, enter a value for the condition and qualifier to match or select from the available values
- Click the Add button to add another condition
- Repeat steps 4-8 as needed
- Click the Save button to save the smart label and its conditions

Once the smart label is created, you can click its title to view which documents had the smart label automatically applied to them.
Labeling and Un-labeling Documents
The Materials Area is displayed whenever a link from the Materials menu is clicked. Use the Materials Area to label and un-label LiveText documents.

Note: You cannot apply or remove smart labels, the All label, or the Trash label.
Labeling and Un-labeling Reviews
The Reviews Area is displayed whenever the Reviews link within the Collaboration menu is clicked. Use the Reviews Area to label and un-label LiveText reviews.

Click the Save & Finish buttons to exit edit mode.
