Dr. McGlothlin and his son went on a road trip to Oklahoma where his son received official heritage in one of the tribes. On the way back to Washington, they visited the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas and had a wonderful time! Dr. Thyfault expressed gladness in being at the meeting. Dr. McPherson informed the Board that his 16-year old is now driving. Dr. McPherson traveled to Virginia to attend a ceremony where his son received a promotion in the Airforce. Dr. McPherson's 8th-grader still holds the first chair in the percussion. Mr. Waddle just came back from spring break where he went to Los Angeles to visit his son. Dr. Beath just returned from a vacation in the desert. Dr. Merwin has purchased a new vehicle. She attended a meeting with Ed Barlow. Dr. Chapman worked on the ranch while on spring break. TEP Chair's Report: |
Dr. Shorr reported that the Department of Teacher Education Programs is in the process of hiring a new faculty person for the Early Childhood Education Program. With the budget reduction concerns, Dr. Shorr is optimistic that the reduction won't be that bad. |
PEAB Business/ Informational: |
- School Administration, SPRING quarter: Dr. Chapman informed the Board that the transitioning to a co-hort program for the Administrator Certification Program and Masters in Education: School Administration Program is going well. After meeting with students, there is a positive outlook on the upcoming changes. We will be tracking those students who may get caught in the middle of the transition and accommodations will need to be made. The enrollment for summer quarter classes is there and looks good. The SeaTac program has been approved to be a "stand-alone" program. Drs. Shelly and Chapman are still trying to offer the program in Lynnwood. The interest is there. So, we may have enough students for Fall 2003.
- New Program: After speaking with the Dean of CEPS (College of Education and Professional Studies), Dr. Chapman found out that the Administration faculty cannot require candidates to take EDF 507 - Studies and Problems in Intercultural Education prior to being admitted into the Master's in Administration Program because the course is not housed under the Department of Teacher Education Programs. However, they can make EDF 507 a co-requisite.
Dr. Chapman met with a couple of the Special Education faculty two weeks ago to discuss EDAD 594 - School Law and EDSE 512 - Educational Rights of Individuals with Disabilities. The SPED faculty agree with combining the two courses and making the law course five credits vs. three credits. The EDSE 512 will still be offered for those students in the Psychology program who need it to complete their program. The idea behind increasing the credits and improving the program is all about raising the bar.
Dr. Chapman is working closely with WASA and AWSP to offer a series of summer workshops for professional development that include activities on legal issues, etc. Those that participate will receive actual credits.
- Annual PEAB Report: Dr. Chapman asked the Board if they had suggestions or comments regarding past practices and/or changes to the programs. After attending several meetings with representatives from other universities, Dr. Chapman realized that CWU's Administrator Certification Program is the only program in the state where the Admin faculty direct, instruct, and advise. Mr. Coppin added that it is refreshing to sit on a Board that is so focused on improvement and raising the bar. Dr. Chapman shared that after speaking with several students about the upcoming changes to the program, the students had asked if tuition would change. When we raise the number of credits in the program to 60 credits, tuition costs will increase. Dr. Chapman noticed that it wasn't a major concern for students. They were more concerned about the quality of the program. Dr. McGlothlin agreed with Mr. Coppin. Dr. McGlothlin also added that while he went through the program in the early 90's, the program was more theoretical. He noticed that the program has improved and has become theoretical and applicable. He supports the idea of a co-hort program because relationships develop and continue after the program. Dr. Thyfault suggested that the Common School Manual be incorporated into the syllabi for the EDAD courses. She has noticed that students do not have the skills to read the manual properly. Dr. Chapman feels that the undergraduates need to have better skills and more familiarity in dealing or writing IEPs. Dr. McGlothlin suggested that the Teacher PEAB and the Administration PEAB meet to discuss possible changes, ideas, and/or suggestions. Dr. Chapman informed the Board that the Principal's Certificate is no longer grade specific. The certificate is now K-12 for everyone regardless of their teaching background. Dr. Chapman asked for names to replace Dr. Niemeyer for one of the two Superintendent representative positions on the Board.
- Meeting Dates for 2003-2004: The Board prefers to have the meetings on Fridays at 9:00am. The actual dates for each meeting are to be determined.
