Blue Room Sample Activities:

The 4-5yr old children in the Blue Room have enjoyed these activities as part of our study of winter weather. They are fun, simple, and provide opportunities for building skills and developing concepts as we play.

Coffee Filter Snowflake Cutting:

Prep: Pre-fold coffee filters; flatten, fold in half and then fold the half into thirds (making a triangle shape).

Note - Great to do the first day it snows! Read a snow story; sing a snow song, or talk about snow crystals each having six sides, but each one is different. You may want to do this with a small group of children.

Directions: Give each child scissors and guide them to cut small pieces out of each side of their triangle, then unfold and magic! Our room is lovely with snowflakes hanging all around.

Goals: Developing fine, motor skills of cutting and folding; learning science concepts and vocabulary about snowflakes; practicing following directions.

Extensions: Have children paint or dobber colorful snowflakes!

Ice Cream in a Bag:

Prep: collect all ingredients in the recipe and materials needed.

Recipe:
1/3c Milk (or cream), 1 Large Ziploc bag, 6T salt (table or rock), 1T. sugar, 1 small Ziploc bag 1/8 teas. Vanilla, Crushed Ice

Directions: Set up 3 ingredients on table in a row, give each child a small bag and have them measure milk, sugar, and vanilla into the bag (an adult bag holder may be needed!) Shut bag securely and place in larger bag with ice. Add salt, seal tightly, and shake. Continue for 3-5 minutes or until milk mixture has frozen.

Goals: Teamwork, cooperation; following steps in a sequence; science concepts of freezing and thawing; liquid and solid, and a fun and tasty treat too!

In our classroom we chose partners and helped each other fill the small bags, then put two small bags in one large bag with ice and salt and passed the bag back and forth with our partner until it was done!
