Frequently Asked Questions

Problem Solving

Problems in the admission process or questions related to admission to Central Washington University should be directed to the Director of Admissions.

Following are frequently asked admission questions with answers:

Question:

Can I be admitted to CWU if my grade point average and/or test scores are low?

Answer:

If you do not meet entrance creteria because your grade point average and/or test scores are too low, you may submit a petition to the Office of Admissions. This is the point at which DSS recommends that you consider disclosing disability status (if you have not done so already.) In some cases, an alternative avenue for admission is provided by the Director of Admissions or the Admission Committee

Question:

Can I be admitted to CWU if I haven't completed all of the core course requirements in high school?

Answer:

The Office of Admissions has some flexibility in this area. However, the core course requirement was established to help determine whether you are "ready" for college-level classes. If you are deficient in several core courses, there is a high probability that you will not be academically prepared for four-year college classes. It is often to the benefit of the student to enroll in basic skills courses at one of the Washington state community colleges prior to atttempting university-level courses.

Question:

Will I have to successfully complete foreign language in order to graduate from CWU?

Answer:

It is the policy of Central Washington University to allow some students the opportunity to meet foreign language entrance or graduation requirements by substituting alternative course work.

Criteria for consideration of course substitution (one of the following statements must be true):

  • The student has attempted but failed to successfully complete a foreign language course.
  • The student has provided sufficient documentation to warrant special consideration (the 4th and 5th sub-test of the MLAT).

The following courses may be substituted to meet a foreign language requirement:

  • American Sign Language
  • Latin-for students with problems with auditory perception.
  • Additional English composition courses.
  • Computer Science-Computer language (e.g. COBAL).
  • Courses dealing with foreign cultures (See CWU catalog).

Student Responsibilities

Students must comply with all procedural requirements for requesting substitution as outlined in the CWU catalog.

Students must submit a petition to the Office of Academic Services requesting the course substitution.

Students must submit their request for substitution at least four quarters prior to anticipated graduation date.

DSS Responsibilities

The Associate Director or Director of DSS will provide a letter of support for students with a documented language processing disorder.
