Does anyone know what the vertical indentation on the upper lip between the lip and the nose is called? You can find the answer buried elsewhere on the CWURA web pages so look around a bit.

President's Corner By Connie Roberts

My term is coming to a close and it seems appropriate to express thanks to those people who have contributed significantly to the year’s success. Many people are responsible for the great activities that the CWU retirees have enjoyed this year.

The winter travel presentation was well attended and over 45 people enjoyed Warren Street’s sense of humor as he entertained the group with stories about visiting Hong Kong. Libby Street also contrasted insights about the educational system in Hong Kong with the United States. Patrick McLaughlin shared interesting statistics about the land size, dense population, and environmental issues.

The Spring Trip to the Museum of Flight and the Chihuly Garden and Glass at the Seattle Center was an adventure for 38 retirees. President-Elect Becky Baker took over the last-minute details and made the trip successful; I’m sorry I was unable to attend because of a family medical emergency. Libby Street arranged for the bus; Libby and Patrick McLaughlin recruited more participants last minute. Edna Madsen graciously made arrangements for the tour of the Chihuly Glass Gardens and brought refreshments for the bus trip. Thanks to all of you for your extra effort.

The Scholarship Committee worked to refine the application and evaluation process this year. Thanks to Libby Street who revised the guidelines for the letter of application and Edna Madsen who developed a matrix to enhance the evaluation of the applicants. Libby also had a poster designed to place in each department that has a graduate program.

A special thanks is extended to Jean Putnam and Don Schliesman who are in their 17th year of organizing an outstanding Senior Open Golf event. The month has changed to September this year so plan to attend. The CWURA Board continues to expand the activities for you to enjoy. Hosting two Fidelity Workshops this year has prompted the board to plan at least one workshop for retirees each year. Changing market conditions and low interest rates create a need to reevaluate managing retirement funds regularly. In addition, Becky Baker has organized wine tasting events on “First Friday”; an article appears in the spring newsletter which lists the dates for the next few months that Becky has arranged.

I hope you will join us on May 16th at the Rodeo City BBQ for our Annual Business Meeting to hear Nick Zentner and enjoy a great meal. I am pleased to turn over the leadership to Becky Baker, president elect, at that meeting with full confidence that CWURA is in good hands. And finally, thank you to you the membership for your support, encouragement, and interest in the CWURA activities. We welcome your suggestions for events and speakers. It is inspiring to see our retirees continue to remain curious and engaged with the broader world.
