Placement Information

Entry Level Courses

Enrollment in Math 100C, Math 101, Math 130, Math 164 requires a satisfactory score on one of the following tests: SAT, ACT, the California Achievement Test (for teacher preparation), the COMPASS Test, or the Intermediate Assessment Test. The scores on the SAT or ACT tests must have been acheived within the last three years before math placement. The student with insufficient test scores is encouraged to enroll in developmental classess. For more information contact the Math Center in Bouillon 206 or 963-1834.

Students who wish to enroll in Pre-Calculus (Math 153 or Math 154) or Calculus (Math 170 or Math 172) and who have not had the necessary prerequisite course at a college or university must take the Mathematics Placement Test (details below). Students will be placed in accord with their results on this test as determined by the Mathematics Department. See the Mathematics Department for more details.

Course Sequences

Admission to any mathematics course having prerequisites requires either a suitable math placement test score or a grade of 2.0 or better in each listed prerequisite to that course.

The Mathematics Placement Test

You will need to take the Mathematics Placement Test in the following situations:

  • You are planning to take Math 153 but have neither:
    • taken Intermediate Algebra here or at another college
    • nor taken high school calculus
  • You are planning to take Math 154 or Math 170 but have neither:
    • taken Math 153 here or at another college
    • nor taken high school calculus
  • You are planning to take Math 172 but have neither:
    • taken Math 154 here or at another college
    • nor taken high school AP calculus

The Mathematics Placement Test is administered on campus approximately once every month in Bouillon 125. Students expecting to find room in a mathematics course should have taken the test during the prior quarter since many classes are filled by the testing date. You can register for the test either at the Mathematics Department (Bouillon 108) and pay the test fee ($15) at the Cashier's office. An Intermediate Mathematics Placement Test is given for entrance into Math 153. An Advanced Mathematics Placement Test is given for entrance into Math 154, Math 170, Math 172. Practice problems for both exams can be found at Academic Placement Testing Program.
