C.S.I. : Faculty, Staff, and Grad Students |
Faculty & StaffAnthony Gabriel, CSI DirectorEmail: gabriela@cwu.edu Anthony Gabriel is completing his 13th year of full-time teaching, having arrived at CWU five years ago via a 5 year stint at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a 2 year position at Western Washington University. Born and raised in the Fraser Valley, B.C., Anthony is another one of our broadly-trained geographers, with a B.A. in Geography and History from Trinity Western University, a Masters of Science in Geography and Regional Planning from Western Washington University, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Guelph. His main teaching interests are in environmental geography, including courses on resource analysis, ecosystem geography, coastal environments, and wetland analysis. Both his Masters and Ph.D. programs emphasized both the theoretical and empirical study of the dynamic interrelationships between biophysical processes within the socio-economic systems in which these processes occur. He is continuing to develop, apply, and test systematic techniques to evaluate restrictions and benefits in the use of biophysical systems such as wetlands, shorelines, and watersheds. His research has involved a large number of undergraduate and graduate students, primarily addressing the ecological analysis and management of lake, river and coastal ecosystems. Recent research topics include assessment of riparian wetland losses and functions, shoreline hazards and inventories, the ecological impacts of shoreline protection, and the limnology of Soap Lake, Washington.
Jennifer Lipton Email: liptonj@cwu.edu Jennifer Lipton joined the team at CSI and the Department of Geography at CWU in 2006. Her research emphasizes the use of geospatial technologies to better understand nature and society interactions. Her current research with CSI combines remote sensing techniques and principles of landscape ecology to better manage land and resources for conservation, land use, ecological integrity and sustainability. Jennifer completed her B.S. degree in Geography from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1993. She worked in rural communities of Eastern WA for a year before moving to Seattle and working at a Landscape Architecture firm. With a strong interest in pursuing broader questions about landscape and society, she matriculated in the Geography graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin where she studied conservation and landscape change in Latin America using a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques. Her research currently focuses on the dynamism of climate, society and ecology in mountain regions. David Cordner Email: cordnerd@cwu.edu David is a Research Assistant at the CSI. He earned a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. After working several years as a landscape design and construction professional, he began his graduate studies at Central Washington University. He earned a Certificate of GIS and is completing a M.S. in Resource Management. As a graduate research assistant with the Department of Geography and Land Studies, David worked on the development of shoreline ecological inventories and characterizations for county and local governments in eastern Washington, as part of their compliance with the Washington State Shoreline Management Act. In addition to his research at CSI, he is also on staff with the Department of Geography and Land Studies as a Scientific Instructional Technician. His research interests include Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) using internet technologies and Environmental Design and Planning. Ben Sainsbury Email: sainsburyb@cwu.edu Ben is a Research Assistant at CSI. He earned a B.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ. After first learning the basics of GIS and remote sensing in Southern Arizona, he began graduate studies at Central Washington University. Ben's thesis research involves new innovations in WebGIS and their potential benefit to the field of resource management. Ben favors open source solutions and has written several programs for the use of the Yakama Tribe in their creative habitat conservation strategies. When not sitting at a terminal writing spaghetti code, Ben enjoys exploring caves, working on his log home and hiking in the hills with his family. |
