Student Opportunities

Year 1

  • Fall: Student receives commitment from a faculty mentor for guidance and direction in creating a research proposal and conducting research.
  • Applications including research proposal are due to the program office in November.
  • Winter: Science Honors Review Committee evaluates applications and research proposals.
  • Winter: Students and Faculty are notified of acceptance into Science Honors Research Program
  • Spring: Students accepted into Science Honors Research Program take Science Honors Junior Seminar.
  • Spring: Students accepted into Science Honors Research Program begin mentored research and enroll in 1 or 2 credits of Research.

Summer:

  • Faculty mentored student research for nine weeks simultaneous with summer school session. Faculty and students receive stipends.
  • Students and faculty participate in weekly research brown bag lunches.
  • Social activities are organized among faculty mentors and student researchers.
  • Students are offered housing on campus for the summer.
  • Students begin drafting the methods and introduction of their thesis.

Year 2

  • Fall: Honors research continues with a complete honors thesis draft due to faculty mentors by the end of fall quarter. Student enrolls in the Capstone Science Honors Seminar.
  • Winter: Honors Research continues with a final complete honors thesis due to the Director of the Science Honors Research Program by spring quarter.
  • Fall & Winter: Student enrolls in Science Honors Research credits.
  • Spring Quarter: Student enrolls in Science Honors Thesis credits. The honors thesis is completed and due in final form in May.
  • Spring Quarter: Students give culminating presentation of honors thesis at SOURCE.
  • Fall, Winter, or Spring Quarter: The honors thesis is presented at a professional conference.
