Dr. Britto Gets Prestigious Book Honor Photo of Dr. Britto.

In the Shadow of Death: Restorative Justice and Death R ow Families, co-authored by Dr. Sarah Britto (Law and Justice) has been named as one of the Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007 by Choice. Only 10 percent of 7,000 works reviewed are included in this list.

Choice Review:
Dr. Sarah Britto (law, Central Washington Univ.), has conducted trailblazing research on a critical social issue that has been ignored or glossed over since the first use of the death penalty: state-sponsored death sentences' and executions' destructive impact on death row families. To address this extensive harm, the author calls for the use of restorative justice outreach to help death row families deal with the complex post-traumatic stress disorder caused by loved ones' lethal sentences. In addition to the findings from the extensive interviews with offenders' family members and from related documents, the author provides excellent statistical data and an outstanding review of the scientific literature on the failures of the death penalty. Well written and compelling, this book is not for the faint of heart or for those who cannot accept the realities of social policy that is iatrogenic rather than healing, but it is a must read for those who desire justice for all those affected by the use of the death penalty.
