The New New Thing

at the CWU Communication Department

The Pulse, a student-produced online magazine, to debut

Students in the Communication Department are creating a new, online magazine that will provide breaking news, magazine-style features, and additional enhancements to serve students, the campus community and alumni.

Called The Pulse, the magazine site will continue to provide the Observer Online on Thursdays, but will also do its own coverage. The editor is Jordan Boland, and the advisor is Steve Jackson. Watch www.cwu.edu/~pulse for its start!

Faculty join department in public relations, film and convergence

Three new tenure-track faculty have joined the Communication Department this fall: Xiaodong Kuang will teach public relations and advertising, Maria Sanders will teach film and scriptwriting, and Steve Jackson will teach convergence media.

Xiaodong Kuang just received his PhD in communication. His dissertation examined the ways advertising might be used to discourage smoking among Chinese youth. He will be teaching courses in media and society, public relations and advertising.

No stranger to the department, Maria Sanders has been teaching here for two years. But last spring, she was selected from a highly qualified, national pool to fill the tenure-track position. Professor Sanders has an MA from the American Film Institute and has worked in the film industry before coming to Central to teach.

Steve Jackson, who most recently taught at Hilbert College, has been hired to help expand the department's offerings in convergent media. He will be teaching online media, corporate video, as well as mass media and society courses. His research interest is in digital humanities, using media to explore society and societal issues.
