Cynthia Mitchell spent 14 years as a full-time daily newspaper reporter and editor before deciding to turn her career from the newsroom to the classroom. Her professional experience includes 10 years at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, four years at The Wall Street Journal and internships at the Associated Press, The Courier-Journal, the Dallas Morning News and the Los Angeles Times. Her writing has won top honors from the National Association of Black Journalists, Cox Newspapers and the Georgia Associated Press. She received a journalism degree at Western Kentucky University, an MBA from Vanderbilt University, and is finishing up her doctoral work at Georgia State University. (The working title of her dissertation is "Shifts in power and the competitive landscape: The impact of new communications technologies on the New York Stock Exchange, 1792-1899.") Besides the history of communication technologies, her other research interests encompass business journalism, the business of journalism, and the historic intersections of both. On the weekends, she and her husband, Steve, and 5-year-old, Georgia, like to go on "bentures," which is usually a day trip involving mountains, rivers or waterfalls within an hour or two of Ellensburg. If she's at home when NPR is broadcasting "Prairie Home Companion" -- which is actually 4 times on the weekends, thanks to WSU's two NPR feeds -- you can often find her at the sewing machine, working on a quilt or playing with her (extensive) fabric stash. Other things she likes to play: Chutes & Ladders, Candyland and hide and seek!
