During the past few years, corporate headlines have repeatedly surprised, frightened, and disturbed the American public. The continuum of news stories about Enron, WorldCom, Tyco and many others focused attention on corruption, greed, and malfeasance. People have been left wondering where these corporate misdeeds and scandals began and whether there is an end in sight. What are the lessons learned from these headlines and, more importantly, how instructive are these stories for understanding business ethics and corporate responsibility?

We are pleased to have Dr. J. Michael Stebbins, director of the Gonzaga Institute of Ethics at Gonzaga University, deliver the 2nd annual College of Business Lecture in Business Ethics. He is responsible for designing and conducting ethics programs aimed at a variety of audiences: students, faculty, staff, alumni, professional groups outside the university, and businesses and other organizations. From 1994 to 2000 Dr. Stebbins served as a Senior Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center, located at Georgetown University, where he directed the Arrupe Program in Social Ethics for Business.

Dr. Stebbins has taught in the interdisciplinary Perspectives in Western Culture Program at Boston College (1989-92), and in the Religious Studies Department at Gonzaga University (1992-94). Before going to graduate studies, Dr. Stebbins worked as a registered nurse at Children's Hospital in Seattle.

Dr. Stebbins holds a B.A. in philosophy from Gonzaga University (1977) and a B.S. in nursing from the University of Washington (1981). He received a Ph.D. in theology from Boston College (1991), concentrating in the areas of systematic theology and ethics. He and his wife Mary Kay have five children.

The lecture at CWU is sponsored through funds provided by Fritz and Joan Glover who share a commitment to the education of our students and an interest in advancing the discussion on campus about business ethics and corporate responsibility.
