Carin Thomas : Mitochondrion Diagram

Superoxide anion radical is produced by the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Superoxide then undergoes dismutation non-enzymatically or enzymatically via the manganese containing enzyme superoxide dismutatse (MnSOD) to produce hydrogen peroxide. Hydroxyl radical is produced from hydrogen peroxide via the iron-dependent reaction shown below. The actual iron ligand in this reaction is unknown.
