During my tenure as Chair of the Faculty Senate, 1990-92, I undertook to use the position of Chair as a bully pulpit to raise issues of interest to the faculty by publishing a column called "Faculty Senate Notes" in the Campus Bulletin which appeared bi-weekly. These pieces often generated quite a bit of interest, even controversy, and some are talked about yet today, especially the ones on sexual harassment and race. A number of the more significant (at least at the time) ones are reproduced here.
On older faculty mentoring newer faculty.
On the problems and prospects of merit pay and a follow up
On organizational communication
On lack of debate of critical issues in the Faculty Senate
On the value of committee membership for learning about the University and Higher Education

On the role of the University president
On the value of spending precious University money on the Japanese garden and a followup
On the importance of perceptions in the University
On the definition of a department
On the limitations of increasing University employment of women and minorities
Following are some other essays I have written. Some may be read online. Just click. The list will be added to from time to time.
