TARGET POPULATION: New students, both freshmen and transfer, and their parentsMISSION STATEMENT: To facilitate summer orientation and welcome weekend programs that assist students with their transition and acclimation to college, and to equip parents with information to help with their son/daughter's transition as well as their own transition and acclimation process.
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES/PROGRAM OBJECTIVE: Three programs are run in the summer and fall: Discover! New Student Orientation: five two-day freshmen and parent programs, two one-day programs for transfer students and family; Wildcat Welcome Weekend: a four-day program for all freshmen at the beginning of fall quarter. A variety of sessions relating to students' transition to college are integrated into each of these programs. See Notes for specific sessions relating to alcohol use that are incorporated into these programs.
COST OF SERVICES: Cost ranges from free to $65, depending on the program.

FUNDING SOURCE: Most of the cost for these programs is funded by University Housing and New Student Programs.

At Discover! New Student Orientation, sessions that address alcohol consumption, education, and prevention at Central Washington University include the following: Parent-only programs: Campus Q & A for parents and facilitated by campus administrators from Housing, Campus Police, Health/Wellness/Counseling, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and faculty; Students in Transition and Parents in Transition programs help parents understand what their son/daughter will face at college and provides parents with strategies to help their young adult cope. Parent and student program: Life in the Residence Halls is facilitated by live-in, professional staff and addresses many aspects of living in the residence halls including alcohol use, policy enforcement, and consequences. Student-only program: Survivor is a session facilitated by University Housing & New Student Programs staff and shares information about alcohol consumption and the impact it has on students' entire college experience.Sessions at Wildcat Welcome Weekend include the following: Challenging the Animal House Perception-discusses the negative stigmas and stereotypes associated with college student alcohol consumption; Look at Me, No MIP-facilitated by campus police addresses department facts, university history, crime statistics, and ways to avoid citations; Sex Scenes-depicts the complex world of sexual relationships with emphasis on individual rights and responsibilities.
