Introduction

The Campus-Community Coalition was established in May 2004 through the leadership of Ellensburg City Mayor Ed Barry and CWU President Jerilyn McIntyre. The Coalition brought together a broad spectrum of community stakeholders who are concerned about the impact of underage and high-risk drinking. Members include local government, law enforcement, prevention agencies, university and public school employees, local property owners, county health department, liquor control board, concerned citizens, and CWU students. The Coalition is committed to changing practices, policies and expectations within our communities to reduce underage and high-risk drinking.

One of the key target areas identified by the Coalition is the need for knowledge regarding the prevention, education, and treatment programs that operate in our community. To increase knowledge of existing programs and put information in an accessible and user-friendly format, the Coalition formed a Resource Committee to research and develop a comprehensive Resource Directory. The directory is intended both for Coalition members as well as community members seeking alcohol education, prevention or treatment resources.

Although the mission of the Coalition is to reduce underage and high-risk drinking, research and experience shows that alcohol abuse and many other substance abuse issues and illegal behaviors often go hand-in-hand. For instance, both campus police and the county prosecuting attorney's office assert that alcohol is the number one date rape drug. Accordingly, this directory references all Kittitas County organizations that were willing to be included and that can help with a broad range of behaviors including and beyond the misuse of alcohol.

Many individuals volunteered considerable time and support to produce this Directory. Special thanks are extended to our Resource Committee members, CWU student volunteers, and Dr. Melody Madlem, CWU Associate Professor, HED 230 (Foundations of Health Education).
