College Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention

Planning Strategy

Mission Statement: The mission of the Campus-Community Coalition is to reduce underage and high-risk drinking by fostering a united and sustained commitment to that goal and by changing practices, expectations and policies within our communities.

Needs, Goals & Objectives

The Coalition identified five areas of need, developed a mission statement, articulated goals and objectives for each area of need, and created committees that would delineate work strategies to accomplish each objective.

Identified Need #1: The need for knowledge and assessment of existing prevention\education programs.

Goal: Increase knowledge of existing programs that address high-risk & underage drinking in our community.
Objective: To develop and disseminate a resource directory.
Goal: Assess the effectiveness of the various prevention programs in reducing high-risk and underage drinking.
Objective: To form an assessment committee to develop a plan to evaluate the Campus-Community Coalition and to collaborate with local programs to assess effectiveness in reducing underage and high-risk drinking.

Identified Need #2: The need for appropriate and consistent consequences within institutions and agencies for alcohol-related infractions.

Goal: Enhance effectiveness of policies, sanctions, and consequences within and among institutions and agencies.
Objectives:
  • To compare and contrast sanctions and consequences of various agencies.
  • To facilitate the development of appropriate & consistent consequences within institutions and agencies.

Identified Need #3: A wide availability of alcohol products and over-promotion of those products to underage and high-risk drinkers.

Goal: Limit alcohol product availability & promotion to underage drinkers.
Objectives:
  • To develop a Hospitality Resource Alliance (HRA).
  • To assess alcohol product availability and promotion.
  • To develop a plan to reduce the availability and over-promotion of products aimed at underage and high-risk drinkers.

Identified Need #4: A lack of places for young adults (under 21) to gather.

Goals:
  • Increase public awareness of existing and new opportunities for young adults (under 21) to gather.
  • Increase use of places/opportunities for young adults to socialize in an alcohol-free environment.

Objectives:
  • To support local agencies with the creation of alcohol-free social, recreational and public service options on campus and in the community and to assist with the promotion of these activities.
  • To identify opportunities that currently exist for young adults (under 21) to gather.
  • To develop a publicity campaign to inform youth about the opportunities that exist.

Identified Need #5: A lack of a consistent and unified voice in supporting and encouraging positive community norms regarding underage and high-risk drinking.

Goal: Advocate, support and encourage positive community norms regarding underage and high-risk drinking.
Objective: To foster a social, academic and residential environment that supports healthy behavior.
