10/29/09 CWU hosts civil debate on same-sex marriage

For people on either side of the issue of same-sex marriage, and for those who aren't sure where they stand, Campus Activities will host a debate Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center Theatre. The debate will feature philosopher, moralist and gay rights advocate Dr. John Corvino and speaker, consultant and family issues author Glenn Stanton. Admission is free and open to the public.

Corvino and Stanton are two of the nation's leading and opposing voices on the issue of same-sex marriage. While the two speakers disagree on many issues, they strongly agree that controversial issues demand civil discussion, not personal attacks, and so they challenge each other's arguments, never each other's motives. In the course of their debate, they will address the very divisive question of whether or not same-sex marriage is beneficial to society with civility and clarity. They will work together to engage the audience while giving them a chance to hear fresh perspectives.

The debate will also include an open forum, in which audience members will get the chance to ask questions for both speakers to answer. The audience is also invited to stay after the debate to meet Stanton and Corvino for a brief period.

"Same-Sex Marriage: a Civil Debate" is sponsored by Campus Activities. Persons of disability may make arrangements for reasonable accommodation by calling 963-1450 or (for the hearing impaired) TDD 509-963-2143.
