As a student in the College of Arts and Humanities, you will be exposed to inspiring professors, innovative programs, friendly classmates, and a wealth of academic and social opportunities. Many of these opportunities are listed here along with information about awards and other resources that you may find useful.

  Art :          
 

Student Art Council : All art students have membership. This organization hosts regular exhibitions of student art and plans and sponsors attendance at local, regional, and national art events.

 
                 
 

Central Clay : Ceramicists are encouraged to join Central Clay. Central Clay organizes various fund raising activities throughout the year to support student attendance at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Central Clay also funds visiting artists and sponsors workshops and other educational activities.

 
                 
 

American Institute of Graphic Arts AIGA : Graphic Design students are encouraged to participate in the student chapter of the AIGA. Members hold regular meetings to discuss discipline specific topics and raise money for travel to national conferences.

 
                 
 

National Art Education Association NAEA : Art education majors belong to a student chapter of the NAEA. NAEA meets regularly to discuss university and community art activities. Students attend local, regional and national art events especially the National Art Education Conference.

 
               
  Communication :        
      PRSSA : Public Relations Student Society of America allows students to network with professionals and gain experience in the field of public relations.
                 
      Society of Professional Journalists : The chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists hosts speakers, sponsors contests and provides conference opportunities.
                 
      Lambda Pi Eta :Students with high academic success and commitment to service are invited to join the student honor society.
                 
      The Bridges Project : An interdisciplinary outreach from Central mentors to area schools. A partner in CWU GEAR UP.
                 
      National Broadcast Society : NBS allows broadcasting students to explore the future of their field.

English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) : The English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) serves the social and academic needs of the English graduate student community. Through guest speakers, regular meetings, evenings out, sponsored readings, and other creative activities, the EGSA supports student participation in the English department, extra-curricular events, and career building opportunities in order to create a fun and healthy learning environment.

English Club for Undergraduates (ECU) : The ECU is intended to create a greater sense of community, both socially and acedemically, among students in the English and Creative Writing majors/minors. The club provides a means for students within the majors/minors to get to know one another outside the classroom and to have fun with their peers. The club provides a means for students within the majors/minors to get to know one another outside the classroom and to have fun with their peers. The ECU holds events such as crockpot-lucks, camping trips, and game nights.

The ECU also works with the EGSA (English Graduate Student Association) to plan a student-faculty events the faculty/studnt bowl-off and poetry nights. Through the collaboration with the EGSA, several undergraduates have expressed interest in the graduate program; additionally, a greater sense of mutual respect has emerged between the undergraduates and graduate students.

Manastash : The Manastash is the Student Literary Journal of Central Washington University. All students at CWU are eligible to submit their original poetry, fiction, drama, and creative nonfiction for consideration of publication. Submission are evaluated by a panel of student editors. Selected materials are published yearly during Spring quarter. Copies of the journal are free and are distibuted across campus. in conjuction with the publication, students whose works are published in Manastash are invited to present their works in a reading sponsored by the English department.

The Scratching Post : The Scratching Post creative writing club is dedicated to nurturing the growing community of creative writers at Central Washington University. The club seek to provide an atmosphere of encouragement for various forms of writing including: poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Club activities include poetry readings, critiques, field trips, and workshops.

Namakemono Japanese Animation (Anime) Club : The Namakemono Japanese Animation (Anime) Club exposes its members and their guests to Japanese culture through various forms of media. They meet every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. For further information visit the website.

 
                 
     

American Sign Language Club (ASL) : The ASL Club was formed by ASL students as a social organization. With the deaf community being nonexistent in Ellensburg this club provides our students the opportunity to enhancen and maintain their ASL skills by mingling.

 
                 
     

German Stammtisch : German Stammtisch meets every Wednesday evening at Robber's Roost at 6:30. German conversation, interesting topics and activities, and food. Contact person is Harmony DeFazio, 963-2615.

                 
     

Russian Club : The Russian club meets to allow its members to speak Russian, sing, cook, drink and discuss politics, history and religion in an intense - but friendly - atmosphere outside of the normal classroom environment.

History Club : In the past few years, the History Club has sponsored talks in which faculty members discuss their diverse paths to academia; sponsored booths at Boo Central (a Halloween event for local children); toured the historic city of Roslyn ; and, after much fundraising in 2004-05, traveled to Washington , D.C. , and to Gettysburg National Battlefield. Those are just a few of the History Club's activities; it has been among the most active clubs on campus.

Local chapters of national organizations

     

WMEA : Music Educators National Conference student chapter--comprised of Music Education majors, it is and has been the largest student chapter in the state and region. The club hold monthly meetings with guest presenters, generates funds through a weekly bake and coffee sale, helps send student members to state, regional and national annual MENC conferences.

                 
     

IAJE : International Association of Jazz Educators—comprised of students with an interest in performing and teaching Jazz. Sponsors a quarterly Jazz Combo concert and weekly jam sessions at the TAV, trips to jazz venues in Seattle . Generates funds by holding weekly pizza lunch sales, helps support members attendance at IAJE national conference.

                 
     

ACDA : American Choral Directors Association—comprised of students interested in pursuing competencies in choral directing.

                 
     

ASTA : American String Teachers Association—comprised of string students, especially those interested in teaching. Supports the activities of the students involved in the Preparatory string program, has secured grants to support string education.

                 
     

PAS : Percussive Arts Society. Comprised of percussion majors on campus. Travels to and participates in annual regional PAS meeting.

Music LLC : (two) – largest on campus, two units, one for upper division students, Professor Mark Babbit, advisor; one for entering freshman, Mark Goodenberger, advisor.

                 
     

Local department organizations.

     

Opera Club : comprised of voice student particularly interested in opera. Generates funds by holding annual Italian Dinner, with singing waiters. Sponsors trips to Seattle Opera performances and rehearsals, appearances and clinics by visiting artists.

                 
     

Trumpet Club : comprised of members of the trumpet studio in the department. Supports annual Trumpet Day with logistical and administrative support, and annual trips for some of its members to national competitions.

                 
     

Trombone Club : comprised of members of the trombone studio on campus. Generates funds with annual Trombone "Carolgrams" at Christmas. Supports the annual Trombone Festival day, and members' trips to the national trombone society convention.

                 
     

Society of Composers : Comprised of students interested in composition. Sponsored National Composers Conference on campus two year ago.

Phi Sigma Tau : Central Washington University is home to the Washington Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the International Philosophy Honor Society. The purpose of Phi Sigma Tau is to serve as a means to award distinction to students with high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy, to promote student interest in research and advanced study in the field, to provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit, to encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed a marked ability in the field, and to popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public. Philosophy and Religious Studies Club : The Philosophy and Religious Studies Club at Central Washington University is an active group that participates in a variety of activities. At the heart of the club are weekly meetings, during which members read and discuss in-depth any number of historical or contemporary writers of philosophical and religious significance. While many members are Philosophy and Religious Studies majors and minors, the club also includes a large number of non-majors/minors who have an active interest in philosophy and religious studies.

CTC : Central Theatre Club is open to any student with and interest in or a love of theatre. The club engages in several annual fundraisers, including concession sales in tandem with USITT, in order to support student involvement in regional theatre productions and conferences.

     

 

     

USITT : United States Institute for Theatre Technology is a local chapter of the national organization currently working toward national recognition.
