9.1 Who Are Classified Staff?

Classified or civil service positions in the College are positions in state service that are not exempt (administration) or faculty (i.e. exempt from the provisions of chapter 41.06 RCW). Current college classified staff positions are: Administrative Assistant B, Costume Shop Supervisor, Electronic Media Technician, Fiscal Tech II, Gallery Manager, Maintenance Mechanic I, Office Assistant II, Piano Technician, Program Coordinator, Secretary Senior, Secretary Supervisor, and Tour and Information Services Coordinator.

9.2 Governing Policies

State of Washington civil service rules apply to all non-represented classified state employees. These rules are superseded by collective bargaining agreements for positions that are in bargaining units (www.dop.wa.gov/rules).

9.3 Search And Hiring Procedures

The Dean is the principal hiring authority of the college, and must be consulted prior to initiating a search for classified staff. Departments should review and update the position description, as appropriate. Classified staff positions are posted electronically using PeopleAdmin. A Civil Service Hiring Checklist may be found on the HR website at www.cwu.edu/~hr/forms/supervisorchecklist.doc

The Administrative Assistant in the Dean's office is typically included on search committees for classified staff positions, and he/she maintains a list of interview questions and practical skill tests that may be used during the interview process.

9.4 Performance Management

Supervisors are required to develop a performance management plan and to assess the performance of their employees during the probationary, trial service, and transition review periods, and at least annually thereafter. This is an important part of supervisory responsibility and provides essential feedback for employees. The College has set a deadline of June 1 for the annual performance review of all non-probationary staff.

Information on Performance Management and Evaluation may be found at www.cwu.edu/~hr/performance/index.html.

9.5 Professional Development

The College strongly supports the professional development of its classified staff. Resources for professional development include:

  • CAH Staff Travel Grant. This $500 grant supports personal development, technical, communication or leadership skills. The deadline for application is February 15.
  • First Wednesday series, L & L 106, 10:00 - 11:00, the first Wednesday of the month during the academic year. During this series a variety of presenters will offer tips and help on questions related to budget, travel, purchasing and contracting.

In addition, the University Training and Development website offers other professional development opportunities (http://www.cwu.edu/~training/index.html).

9.6 Staff Recognition Award

The CAH Staff Recognition Award honors outstanding contributions by a classified staff employee in the College to his or her department, or to the College of Arts and Humanities. Employees are nominated by CAH faculty, chairs and staff. The award recipient will receive a $250 cash award and will be recognized during a special ceremony in December as well as at the annual Spring Awards Banquet in May.

Nomination forms are due the first Monday in November. Forms may be downloaded from the CAH website: http://www.cwu.edu/~cah/forms.html
