7. Faculty Development

Supporting faculty development is a paramount priority of the College of Arts and Humanities. The funding and activities described below are designed to support individual faculty members, and to help create a community of scholars and artists.

Below is a list of existing faculty development opportunities sponsored and funded by CAH. It is in the strategic plan of the College to expand upon these by enlarging, when possible, the fiscal support for them, as well as to create new development initiatives as funding allows.

7.1 CAH Travel Funds
  1. Travel Fund for Full-time Faculty

    Purpose: To support professional travel by CAH faculty, for scholarly and creative development.

    Travel to : Professional meetings, trips to archives or collections, performance or exhibition travel, or other travel intended to enhance one's scholarly or creative endeavors. Priority will be given to faculty who are presenting peer-reviewed scholarship or creative work; those who are attending a national or international event; those who are chairing, presiding or commentating; and tenure track faculty. While it is possible to receive funding for more than one trip per year, priority will also be given to applicants who have not previously received an award.

    Allowance : In state: $300; Idaho , Oregon , and B. C.: $400; Outside these areas: $500; International: $750.

    Application deadline: First Monday in November and February, annually.

    Travel Dates : Funds for travel from July 1 ST through June 30 TH , of the current fiscal year. Travel scheduled for dates after June 30 TH will be eligible for subsidy from the next year's fund.

    Retroactive requests : Retroactive requests may be submitted if the trip was taken during the current fiscal year (since July 1 st of the year), and if money was paid out of pocket that has not been reimbursed by another source. Attach appropriate receipts and documentation.

    Eligibility : All full-time faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities are eligible to apply. Funding is on a competitive basis. If applications exceed available moneys, priority will be given, as noted above, to proposals designed to enhance scholarship and creative activity, and to those who are presenting, exhibiting, or performing.

    Other funding : CAH Travel funds may be used to supplement funding from other sources, such as the faculty development funds specified in the CBA, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, departmental travel moneys, etc. Total subsidy may not exceed the cost of the travel.

  2. Travel Fund for Part-time Faculty

    Purpose: To support professional travel by part-time CAH faculty, for scholarly and creative development and/or pedagogical enhancement.

    Travel to : Professional meetings, trips to archives or collections, performance or exhibition travel, or other travel intended to enhance one's scholarly/creative and/or teaching endeavors. It is not necessary to present, perform, or exhibit in order to receive support.

    Allowance : $250

    Application deadline: First Monday in November and February, annually.

    Travel Dates : Funds for travel from July 1 st through June 30 th of the current fiscal year.

    Retroactive requests : Retroactive requests may be submitted if the trip was taken during the current fiscal year (since July 1 st of the year), and if money was paid out of pocket that has not been reimbursed by another source. Attach appropriate receipts and documentation.

    Eligibility : All part-time faculty who are teaching at least 15 credits in the College of Arts and Humanities, during the current academic year are eligible to apply. Funding is on a competitive basis. If applications exceed available moneys, priority will be given to those with greater longevity as faculty at CWU. Travel may only occur during a quarter when the faculty member is employed by CWU.

    Other funding : CAH Travel funds may be used to supplement funding from other sources, such as the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, departmental travel moneys, etc. Total subsidy may not exceed the cost of the travel.

7.2 CAH Summer Scholarship/Creativity Awards

Purpose : To provide financial support to enable faculty to engage in specific scholarly or creative projects during the summer months.

Fund : Two grants of $2,500 each; up to four if funds allow. Grants may be awarded in the form of compensation (taxable) or in goods and services.

Application deadline : First Monday in April of each academic year.

Eligibility : All tenured and tenure-track faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities.

Criteria for selection : The primary objective of the CAH Summer Scholarship/Creativity Grants is to make an investment in faculty's long-term program of intellectual and imaginative development.

The criteria for evaluation are:
  1. The excellence of the proposal as scholarly or creative endeavor.
  2. The clarity and specificity of the planned work.
  3. The extent to which the project described will either
    1. build a tenure-track faculty member's scholarly and/or creative program.
      or
    2. support a tenured faculty member's ongoing scholarship and/or creativity.
      or
    3. enable a tenured faculty member to re-engage with the intellectual and imaginative currents of his or her discipline.
  4. The likelihood that the project will ultimately culminate in completed work available to the appropriate audience (c. f. peers, colleagues, fellow scholars or artists, students, the public).

Grant period : The award will be granted for work undertaken during the summer months. It is not necessarily expected that work on the project be fully completed during the summer. For grantees who elect to receive compensation the work period will be July 1 - 31.

Award follow-up : Grantees will be expected to present a report to the Dean detailing their summer activity on the project , due by the end of Fall quarter of the same year. They will also be expected to give a presentation on their project in the CAH Speaker Series.

7.3 CAH Summer Teaching Grants

Purpose : To provide financial support to enable faculty to complete a teaching project related to our college student learning goals. The project is to be completed in summer and implemented in a course during the following academic year.

Fund : Two grants of $2,500 each, one for a non tenure track faculty member, and one for a tenured/tenure track faculty member. Grants may be awarded in the form of compensation (taxable) or in goods and services.

Application Deadline : First Monday in April of each academic year.

Eligibility : All tenured and tenure-track faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities, and non tenure track faculty who have completed at least 3 years of service at CWU.

Criteria for selection : The primary objective of the CAH Summer Teaching grants is to enable faculty to complete an innovative teaching project they would not have time to do during the regular academic year. The project should be designed to enhance and measure student learning, and should link clearly to one or more of our college student learning goals.

The criteria for evaluation are:
  1. The excellence of the proposal as innovative teaching endeavor
  2. The clarity and specificity of the planned work.
  3. Project's potential to promote student learning
  4. Clear link to one or more CAH Student Learning Goals
  5. Well developed assessment plan

Grant period: The award will be granted for work undertaken during the summer months. For grantees who elect to receive compensation the work period will be July 1 - 31.

Award follow-up: Grantees will be expected to present a report to the Dean detailing their summer activity on the project, due by the end of Fall quarter of the same year. They will also be expected to give a presentation on their project in the CAH Speaker Series, and to implement their project in one or more courses during the academic year following their grant.

7.4 CAH Interdisciplinary Teaching Project Award

Purpose : To facilitate implementation of a special, newly created team-taught course that incorporates interdisciplinary approaches.

Eligible participants : A team of two faculty from separate academic departments at CWU, at least one of which is in the College of Arts and Humanities. At least one member of the team must be a tenure-track or tenured faculty.

Number of Awards : One annually; funds one team-taught course.

Funding : The CAH Dean's office will fund salary (in the case of non tenure-track faculty) and/or replacement costs to departments (for tenured and tenure-track faculty at the adjunct rate), depending on the make-up of the teaching team. Funding will enable both members of the team to teach the special interdisciplinary course at full compensation, with no penalty to their home departments.

Cross-listing : The course selected will be cross-listed in the two departments represented by the teaching team.

Proposals due : Three complete copies to CAH Dean's office on the first Monday in April of the given academic year.

Proposals must be a joint submission by the team, and include:
  1. A completed application form, "Interdisciplinary Teaching Project Award" form, which you can find online at: http://www.cwu.edu/~cah/forms.html
  2. A preliminary syllabus for the proposed course.
  3. A completed copy of the standard Transmittal Form currently used to submit special topics course proposals to the University Curriculum Committee.
  4. A separate, ONE-PAGE statement from the teaching team, addressing:
    1. the special contribution of the proposed course to the curricula of the two home departments
    2. the specific roles of both members of the teaching team in the content and pedagogy of the course
    3. the ways the course will enrich the intellectual community
  5. A brief statement, signed by the respective department Chairs, indicating the staffing implications in each home department. (Departments will receive replacement costs as necessary, for faculty participating in the project.)
  6. A current curriculum vita for each member of the team.

Selection criteria : Proposals will be evaluated by the CAH Scholarship Committee working with the Dean.

Evaluation will be based on the following criteria:
  1. The quality and detail of the proposal.
  2. The potential benefits to students, faculty, departments, and the College and University.
  3. The likelihood that the proposal will stimulate new curricular interests and long-term interdisciplinary collaborations.

7.5 Special Events Funding

The College retains a small fund to support special academic projects and events for individuals and departments. To apply for funding, please complete the "Special Events Application for Funds", which can be found online at: http://www.cwu.edu/~cah/forms.html

7.6 CAH Symposia, Colloquia, And Speakers Series
  1. Year-long Thematic Colloquia

    In certain academic years, the College identifies a topic of compelling interest that crosses disciplinary lines. Through a series of speakers, symposia, films, exhibits, and other public academic events, the topic is explored from a range of perspectives. These exploratory events are designed to enrich intellectual life for students and faculty of the University, and extend to the community to bridge scholars and citizens. Events for the symposia and speakers series are planned and coordinated by the CAH Scholars' Program Committee.

  2. CAH Speaker's Series

    The CAH Speaker series provides opportunities for a faculty member or person from off campus to make a formal scholarly or creative presentation to which all faculty, staff, students and community members are invited. One purpose of the series is to showcase the work of CAH faculty, and provide constructive feedback for works in progress. The schedule of the Speakers' Series will be published monthly and available on the CAH Website.

  3. Conferences And Speakers

    CAH also helps to sponsor on-site professional conferences, meetings, and gatherings that have been brought to campus through the efforts of individual faculty, departments, or local student or professional associations. Periodically, CAH also hosts outside speakers or presenters.
