10. CAH Awards and Recognition

10.1 Awards Banquet

The College of Arts and Humanities holds an annual Awards Banquet in May. Faculty and students are presented with awards following a social reception and dinner. The recipient of the staff award is recognized at a special holiday ceremony and at the annual Awards Banquet. 10.2 Faculty Awards

Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award
This award is given annually to a tenured or tenure-track CAH faculty member to recognize significant achievement at CWU in innovative teaching strategies, curriculum and/or program development, and positive impact on student learning.

Outstanding Faculty Research Award
This award is given annually to a tenured or tenure-track CAH faculty member to recognize research at CWU that represents significant cumulative achievement and/or individual work that has salient impact on the field.

Outstanding Faculty Artistic Achievement Award
This award is given annually to a tenured or tenure-track CAH faculty member to recognize work or performance done while at CWU that represents significant cumulative artistic achievement and/or individual work that has salient impact on the field.

Outstanding Non-tenure Track Faculty Teaching Award
This award is given annually to a CAH non-tenure track faculty member to recognize significant achievement in innovative teaching strategies and a positive impact on student learning.The nominee must be a full-time or part-time non-tenure track faculty member teaching at least 15 credits in the College of Arts and Humanities during academic year 2007-2008.

Interdisciplinary Teaching Project Award

To facilitate implementation of a special, newly created team-taught course that incorporates interdisciplinary approaches. One award annually, funds one team-taught course. The course selected will be cross-listed in the two departments represented by the teaching team.

Eligible participants: A team of two faculty from separate departments at CWU, at least one of which is in the College of Arts and Humanities. At least one member of the team must be a tenure-track or tenured faculty.

Funding: The CAH Dean's office will fund salary (in the case of non tenure track faculty) and/or replacement costs (in the case of tenure track and tenured faculty) to departments, depending on the make-up of the teaching team. Funding will enable both members of the team to teach the special interdisciplinary course at full compensation, with no penalty to their home departments.

10.3 Student Awards

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

The following undergraduate student awards are presented at the CAH annual banquet. Faculty should encourage their very best students to apply for these awards.

The Thomas Gause Award for Achievement in Music
This award is given annually in alternate years for outstanding work in composition or performance. The genre for 2007-2008 is composition. The award will be given to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize an original music composition. Submissions should include a copy of the original score and a CD recording of a performance of the piece.

The Betty E. Evans Award for Achievement in Creative Writing
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize a single work of creative writing. Genres alternate between short fiction, playwriting, and screenwriting one year, and poetry the next. The genres for 2007-2008 are short fiction, playwriting and screenwriting. Manuscripts must be computer-generated and include a title.

CAH Award for Achievement in Non-Fiction Writing
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize a single piece of non-fiction writing. The genres alternate between journalism and creative non-fiction. The genre for 2007-2008 is journalism. Manuscripts must be computer-generated and include a title.

The George Stillman Award for Achievement in Art
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize a single work of creative artistry. Categories alternate between 3 dimensional and 2 dimensional works. The category for 2007-2008 is 3 dimensional works, including theatrical design. Entries must be submitted in photograph or slide form with the "top" clearly indicated and the title of the piece written on the photograph or slide.

CAH Award for Achievement in Performance
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize a single performance. Categories alternate between recorded (film and video, broadcast journalism) and live (theatrical or music) performance. The category for 2007-2008 is recorded performance. Student producers/directors or reporters wishing to enter their work for this category should include a one-page synopsis of the work (including TRT, date of the production, and cast & crew credits, as appropriate) and a copy of the work in either VHS or DVD format (do not submit originals). All entries become the property of CWU, College of Arts and Humanities.

The Raymond Smith Award for Achievement in Scholarship
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student to recognize a single scholarly work. As many as two awards may be given each year. Manuscripts must be computer-generated and include a title.

CAH Outstanding Student Award
This award is given annually to a CAH undergraduate student who has an excellent academic record and has demonstrated a commitment to improving our campus and/or local communities. Students must be nominated for this award by one or more faculty members. Nomination letters should address the criteria above and be accompanied by the student's resume.

Eligibility :

To enter, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits during Spring quarter 2008 with a declared major or minor in one of the eight CAH departments (Art, Communication, English, Foreign Languages, History, Music, Philosophy and Religious Studies or Theatre Arts) Latino and Latin American Studies, Asia/Pacific Studies, Film and Video Studies, or Africana and Black Diaspora Studies.

Submission Process:

Students may submit entries in any or all of the competitions, but are limited to one entry per competition. Entries can be work submitted for a class, or created specifically for the award competition.

All entries must include an entry form and a copy of the work that generated the entry. The student's name should not be on the entry proper to enable anonymous judging. For forms and further information see:

GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship Award
This award is given annually to a CAH graduate student to recognize a single work of scholarship that represents a significant achievement and/or a salient potential impact on its field.

Outstanding Graduate Student Artistic Achievement Award
This award is given annually to a CAH graduate student to recognize a single work or performance that represents significant artistic achievement and/or a salient potential impact on its field.

Nomination and Submission Process:

Nominations may be submitted by current full-time or part-time faculty or staff in the College of Arts and Humanities. Individuals may not nominate themselves. Nomination forms and other information can be found at:

10.4 Staff Award

The Staff Recognition Award honors outstanding contributions by classified staff in the College to his or her department or to the College. Employees are nominated by CAH Faculty, chairs, and staff. The award recipient is recognized during a special holiday ceremony and at the annual Awards Banquet. Nominations are due each year on the first Monday in November.
