Subject- Calendar

There should be an actual calendar that is easy to find on this web site that shows all events including when breaks begin and end as well as finals weeks and other holidays and important deadlines.

Forwarded to- Jesse B. Days, CWU Web Developer, Information Technology Services

Response- The Calendar link resides in many place just off of the CWU home page. Examples are: the fly-out menus from Future Students, Current Students and Administration, Faculty and Staff. The Calendar options are: Academic Yearly, Quarterly, Athletics and Campus Events.

Subject- Parking

I would like to suggest that there be free parking during Christmas Break, Spring Break and inter-sessions between quarters. There is certainly enough parking spaces when students and faculty are not present on campus. It also does not fit the two main objectives listed in WAC 106-116-020 which are the purpose of regulating parking, that being: - To minimize traffic disturbance during class hours and facilitate the work of the university by assuring access by vehicles and by assigning the limited parking space for the most efficient use. It also important to note that Central is one of the few institutions, if not the only state college, that issues fines during breaks in the academic year.

Response- The CWU parking lots are consistently enforced all year Monday thru Friday, 7:30AM to 4:30PM. All the parking lot signs indicate this information. Many of the CWU staff are actually on campus during all breaks and expect parking rules to be enforced during these breaks for conformity. Many times, we also have conferences and meetings scheduled for the campus during breaks. Therefore, it is mandatory that the parking rules be adhered to. If you have any further questions, please contact the CWU parking office at 509-963-2667 or parking@cwu.edu.

We did contact some of the other Washington universities and they indicate that they also enforce during breaks. Thank you. Barbara Maloney

Subject- Parking

Why can't students park for free on campus on dead day and during the rest of finals week? It isn't like the lots are full or anything anyway.

Subject- Parking pass

I had paid for a one day parking pass and still recieved a parking citation....even though I filled out the parking citation appeal form the fine was only reduced how can you see this as reasonable? Sure I am still given the option of taking the ticket down to the Kittitas County Courthouse and going through a second appeal process but the point is CWU parking sevices is wasting my time because the parking guy is too lazy too look to see if people have parking passes in their dash boards. Can nothing be done about the rampage this man seems to be on?

Forwarded to- Barbara Maloney, CWU Parking

Response- The enforcement personnel always try to look thoroughly for a parking permit in the vehicle before issuing a citation. Apparently, they were unable to see your daily parking permit. The decision on your appeal is made by the parking appeal board which is composed of faculty, staff and students. The board reviews all the information presented and makes a decision accordingly. If you have any further questions, please contact the CWU parking office at 509-963-2667 or parking@cwu.edu.

Thank you.

Subject- Spam email

I am tired of getting loads of spam email in my groupwise accounts can't anything be done about it?

Forwarded to- Carmen Rahm, Assistant Vice President for Information Technology

Response- The ITS Department takes aggressive steps to eliminate as much external spam as possible, without creating too much risk of filtering out legitimate emails. Normally, CWU has been receiving approximately 5 millions emails from off campus each month. Nearly 80% of that email is identified as spam and not delivered to the addressee. Additional emails are flagged as spam, and delivered (they fall into a grey area, based on current spam filtering algorithms). In September this year, our incoming emails jumped to nearly 10 million, and in October they increased again to 15 million. Nearly 90% of that mail is rejected, but spam still gets through. One of the current ITS Projects is to implement a new email gateway which will do two primary things regarding spam. First, it will allow ITS to make some improvements in our filtering at the "gateway", when email enters the campus. More importantly, it will significantly improve the end-users ability to tailor their spam filter (much like you might do with your home email), via a web interface. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to lessen the number of spam emails that come to CWU. We can only continue to take steps to identify this spam, filter it (at the server or by the user), and reduce the delivery of spam that arrivers here.

Subject- Final Exams

it is crap that some students final exams are all on one day, especially when they are on Friday of finals week. Who can a student talk to this about?

Forwarded to- Tracy Terrell, Registrar

Response- We do randomly change the final exam times, and unfortunately, it does work out that some students do have conflicts with their final exams. In this case, the student just needs to go to their instructor with a copy of their final exam schedule, and ask that they be rescheduled for another time. Faculty are willing to do this.
If any students have problems with the instructor not rescheduling the exam, then they can contact the Department Chair.
Thank you
Tracy

Subject- CWU's computer network services

This is in regards to CWU's computer network services. For the past few weeks it seems that web services hosted by CWU (GroupWise (ESPECIALLY!), BlackBoard, and the web site) have suffered from some tremendous performance issues. Access to these services has been slow, almost to the point of unusable. It seems that GroupWise especially has been slow both on and off campus- and off campus not just from one ISP, but multiple ISPs and locations. I have not tried to access GroupWise with the thick client on campus, just with the WebAccess service. I have heard some staff say they've noticed the slowdown, and students I talk to agree. Just wondered if ITS is aware of the issue and if they're working to identify and correct it. (Is it server hardware, or perhaps network bandwidth?) Thanks!

Forwarded to- Roland Tollefson, Director of Networks and Operations

Response- thanks to the long awaited Charter cable modem installation in our test room and through the recent concentrated efforts of my staff, Greg, Larry and Chris, we have made configuration changes which we believe will substantially boost performance through Charter. They are also likely to have a positive impact on performance through Fairpoint.
Roland
