Subject - Night Sky Concern

Hello folks,
I have seen the progress made on the new buildings just north of the music building. I wonder what sort of outside lighting there will be, as we think ahead to the night sky situation. As early as the 70's, Tucson was concerned with the lack of darkness in their night sky. They had an observatory nearby to worry about. Now, however, night skies are increasingly compromised with light pollution. Ellensburg is visible from space now! I hope Central will have good outside lighting, in which the lights shine downward and are shielded above.

Thanks for your consideration.

Forwarded to - Bill Yarwood, Director of Facilities Management

Response - All lighting on Student Village South (new buildings just north of the Music Building) has full cut off and meets requirements for dark sky. Per CWU construction standard all lighting added to the campus will be dark sky friendly (it will be cut off type fixtures). This construction standard has been in place since April of 2008 for all new designs.

Thank you .

Subject - Single Dorm Rooms

Don't allow single dorms. They make students feel isolated and make them unable to think without social interaction.

Forwarded to - Richard DeShields, Senior Director University Housing and New Student Programs

Response - Thank you for your response regarding single rooms. University Housing has many housing options to meet the many needs of our students. We value community in general and know that our shared rooms, suite style living options, and our apartments that have multiple occupancy are often well received; however, there are also those students who do quite well in single rooms. Our newly designed residence hall will include 51% singles and also provide multiple occupancy spaces. We do know that some students do isolate themselves in a single room and this is why we provide opportunities for room changes at different times in each quarter.

Subject - Budget Cuts

In this time of budget tightening, I would hope that this time, unlike the past, that administrative/management positions be scrutinized, in the past the cuts have come from the bottom, the civil service, lowest paying positions. How many custodian/grounds worker/office assistant positions would need to be cut to equal one middle management position? If we have supervisors and high level administrative positions, why do we need "middle management" positions? In business, the way to "save" money has always been to "cut out the middle man." Why wouldn't this work for CWU?

Budget cutting suggestions:
Cut out the "middle man" Cut administrative positions to 9 month positions, Make them cyclic.
Cut low enrollment or non performing programs. (Can ANYONE remember a program on this campus EVER being cut?)
Bring in a Higher Education efficiency expert to make non-biased budget cutting decisions.
Don't balance the budget on the backs of students who are already struggling to pay for an education.

Forwarded to - Ellen W. Hall, Interim Vice President, University Relations

Response - Thank you for placing your ideas for cost savings in the general University Suggestion Box. You have made suggestions that can be passed on to the Central Washington administration for serious consideration. It is important for the University to make efforts to assure that students continue to receive the highest quality education possible without unduly increasing their financial burden. I will pass your specific suggestion on to other members of the university administration. I want to assure you that suggestions such as those you have made are being taken into consideration at all levels of the institution.

On December 24, 2009, President McIntyre sent a request asking that members of the campus community make suggestions to their supervisor, manager, and/or vice president or to send their suggestions to a special e-mail address that will be given to the administration at regular intervals. Please use these means to offer your suggestions. Thank you for your concern for the people of Central Washington University in these financially challenging times.
