Business Services and Contracts : Suggestions and Responses |
March 200903.09.01 Suggestion - Everyone knows the SEOI is broken. No one wants to fill out a form with 30 questions, nearly every one of which is an opinion. For us, it would be better to have 10-12 good questions, and put them on the computer. To get your grades, you have to fill out the SEOI in the privacy of your own home. That way you do not waste class time. It can be a real pain when two or three people in the class who love the professor are trying to get you to change your scores, and half the class is screwing around because they think the thing is a joke, and the person giving the SEOI is trying to get you to write faster, or write nothing at all because they want to get out. Other colleges can do the computer scoring system, why not us? Forwarded to - Dr. Tracy L. Pellett, Professor, Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies Response - There is a joint faculty and administrative committee revising the SEOI form and administration procedures. The questions will be behaviorally anchored and based on sound reserach as to teaching effectiveness literature. An electronic and web-based delivery system is being examined and considered. No recommendations have been made to this point on this issue. 03.09.02 Suggestion - Today, when I was walking back to my dorm after dark (around 9) while visiting some friends across campus I was terrified. It was like walking in a power outage or something. Why are there no street lamps on in certain areas (especially over by Kamola)? It was SOOOO dark near where I lived on campus, I could barely see to put my key in the door! It's really REALLY dangerous not to have good lighting in a place where so many people are living together! I know it's nice to think that turning off lights is helping our planet or preventing light pollution, or whatever the reason, but can't we do something else "green" instead of endangering students. It's like your asking for rapes and other problems. I want to feel safe on campus, and I usually do (I'm from the city and I've always felt totally safe walking about), but now, with no lights on at night, I'm not sure I feel safe anymore. :( Please turn all the lights back on, and think about adding some more. Hopefully the new dorms will not have this problem. Thank you Forwarded to - Peter Richmond, P.E., LEED AP Electrical Engineer, Facilities Planning & Construction Response - The Electrical Shop has been trouble shooting a short in this circuit for over a week when the fault is found the lights will be back on. Until the fault is found these lights will be on and off due to the nature of the fault it is intermittent. 03.09.03 Suggestion - Why can't you download free versions of adobe on the computers in Hebeler Hall? Forwarded to - Fred Stanley (Computer Science) and Dave Storla (ITS) Response - In order to give a proper and complete answer to your question we need a bit more information. Specifically, what free versions of Adobe software are you trying to download? When you say "computers in Hebeler Hall" which computer location(s) do you mean as there are the "general use labs (203, 204E, 209 and 218)", also Computer Science department dedicated labs and even a couple labs on the 1st floor of Hebeler? Finally, do you mean "download" or "installation" of the software? The reason is you should be able to download but may have a problem installing the software after it is downloaded. If you can supply answers to these questions, we can give a more thorough response. Please contact Dave Storla, IT Project Manager for Labs and University Centers at 963-2354 for general use labs and/or Fred Stanley, Computer Science System Analyst for 2nd floor Hebeler labs at 963-1443 for additional information to your questions. 03.09.04 Suggestion -Could you please let me know when the students need to be out of the dorms for summer break. We may be out of town the last weekend when classes are over. Can we pick up things from the dorm the next weekend. Let me know deadline to pick up stuff from dorms. Thanks. Forwarded to - Richard DeShields, Senior Director University Housing and New Student Programs Response - Because there is a quick turnover of the halls for summer commitments, we are unable to have students stay for any longer period of time. If there are specific needs, we encourage students to speak with their Residence Hall Coordinator; however, limited extensions will be granted due to space needs. 03.09.05 Suggestion -Return to the reputation of being innovative and cutting edge; begin offering fully online degree programs. You will reach even more students who need CWU's programs this way. Forwarded to - Dr. Tracy L. Pellett, Professor Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies Response - CWU is proud to note that it has begun a concerted and coordinated effort to increase its accessibility to students by increasing its offerings via online delivery. The university has gone from offering eight courses per quarter to more than 80 this coming summer. There are also plans in the works for developing completely online programs. The first of these will be Information Technology & Administrative Management to be offered completely online this fall, 2009. It is the intent to develop 1-3 more degree programs, minors, and certificates completely online within the next 1-3 years. 03.09.06 Suggestion -What is the "old SURC " used for? It's in a really good location on campus, I was just wondering why Central doesn't use it for something for the students, like making it into a little on-campus shopping center or a cool hang-out (I personally think an ice skating rink with some little stores would be super cool, lol, no pun intended. Everyone loves ice skating stuff - like hockey. And, it would be nice to have some "on-campus" shopping options). Kind of seems like a waste having it just sit there. Anyway, I saw it the other day and I was just wondering? Forwarded to - John Drinkwater, Director, Campus Life Response - The old Student Union was owned and operated with student funds. When the new building was being built the SUB was, by agreement between the student government and the university administration, transferred to the ownership of the state of Washington. For that transfer the University spent considerable funds preparing the new SURC site for construction. The students didn't have adequate funds to operate both buildings. Neither has the State allocated funds to renovate and operate the old SUB. So it has been moth-balled for the past three and a half years. There is a plan being developed to tear down the old portion of the building and use the newer portion built in 1969. The plan is to move Information Technology Services into the north portion of the building. However we do not have state funds for the project yet. Given the states current economic crisis it may be a while. Great question!
