Set Induction:  How many of you have heard of the game Ultimate Frisbee? It looks pretty fun, huh? Well, today we are going to learn a few of the basic skills needed to play, and then at the end of class we’ll have a few minutes to put those into practice in a quick game of Ultimate Frisbee!

Instant Activity: Capture the Running Flag

Mark off a large enough boundary to contain the class, yet still allow plenty of room for all to run. Assign, or ask for volunteers, 2-4 students to be flag holders, then give each flag holder a scarf to either be tucked into their back pocket or their waistband. Once the flag is put there, the flag holder can no longer touch the flag. The rest of the students will chase the flag holders, trying to capture the flag for themselves. Once they have captured the flag, they now will try to protect it from the rest of the class.

Applications

  • Have equipment spread out and easily accessible

Informing task:  You have 3 seconds to find a partner, 3-2-1. When I say go, I want you and your partner to grab a Frisbee, find a spot between the cones on either line, and begin tossing it back and forth. Go!

  • Have cones set up to let students know where to go
  • I want you to try throwing exclusively with the backhand technique
  • Work on keeping the Frisbee level on its way through the air
  • Step with your same foot
  • Flick your wrist
  • Pick a target around your partner and try to hit that same spot 5 times in a row
  • Demonstrate each task for the students so they know what to look for
  • Now, I want you to try using the forehand technique
  • Work on keeping your elbow at your hip, this will keep the Frisbee level
  • Forearm parallel to the floor
  • Flick your wrist
  • Pick a target around your partner and try to hit that same spot 5 times in a row
  •
