Lesson Title/Focus: Seasons of the Year/Science                     Grade: 3rd

Input: In this unit students will be able to integrate science, art, and dance. Students will have to opportunity to explain the different changes and characteristics of each of the four seasons. Students will also draw a scene from their favorite season using "Paint" and do creative dance movements to express themselves.

Instructional Materials Needed:

 

Lesson Objective:

 

a.       Students will be able to name the different seasons of the year, and explain some different occurrences and characteristics of the four different seasons.

b.      Students will create a picture of their favorite season of the year using the computer program "Paint." When the students are finished, they will show their picture to the class using Power Point.

c.       Students will work with the people at their tables to create a dance about seasons of the year.


Standards:

 

            NET-S: 2A: Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others

employing a variety of digital environments and media.

  • Students will create a picture of their favorite season using the computer and the program "Paint."
  • NET-S: 2B: Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.

  • Students will share their picture with the class in a Power Point presentation.
  • NET-S: 6A: Understand and use technology systems.

  • Students will use the computer to create a picture of their favorite season.
  • NET-S: 6B: Select and use applications effectively and productively.

  • Students will use the "Paint" program to create their favorite season picture and share it with the class.

    Anticipatory Set: To start the lesson, ask your students if they have seen a change in the weather over the year. Lead a short discussion on how the weather changes over the year due to the four different seasons. Then ask your students the following questions: Can you tell me what the four seasons of the year are? What are the major characteristics of these seasons?

     

     

     

    Teaching Procedure:

       
    1. Start by asking the students if they can name the different season of the year.
    2. Write the different seasons on the board. (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer)
    3. After this ask the students to name the sorts of occurrences or characteristics each have. (What pops into the students' heads when they think about the different seasons).
    4. List all of these things on the board.
    5. Next, have the students go to the computer and create a picture of their favorite season using "Paint."
    6. Once the students are done creating their picture have them put it into Microsoft Power Point for a class presentation.
    7. Have the students think of what they want to say when they present their picture to the class.
    8. Once students have presented their picture have them work with the people at their tables to create a dance that will remind us of a certain season of the year.
    9. Each group will share these in front of the class.

     

    Discussion Questions:

    1. Discuss with the students what they have learned about the four seasons. What changes in each season?
    2. Discuss the different activities students can participate in during each of the different seasons. What can they think of?
    3. What do you remember most about the certain season? What did you do?

     

    Evaluation/Assessment:

    1. Watch how students participate during activities.
    2. Display their pictures in the hall or on a bulletin board.
    3. Whatever the students do will be excellent as long as they are cooperating, and having fun.
    4. When the students present their picture have them explain why they chose that season as their favorite season.
