Sarah Spurgeon Gallery Exhibition Calendar 2008

Fall 2008

a thousand words, October 3 – 26, 2008
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 2, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Photographs by Dan Powell, Robin Bachtler Cushman, Aaron Forman, Joshua Jalbert, Kathleen Murney, and Rani Robison

Dan Powell is a CWU alumni (classes of ’73 and ‘78) who has served as Associate Professor of the Photography Program at the University of Oregon, Eugene, since 1987, and has been head of the department since 1997. The exhibit features his photographs, as well as that of five recent Master of Fine Arts recipients who studied under his guidance. As up-and-coming photographers, their work is both a reflection and a departure from that of their mentor. This confluence of ideas and techniques between mentor and student mentee is a vital dynamic within university art departments that encourages emerging talent.

Sponsored by the Reino and Naomi Randall Lecture Series

Robin Bachtler Cushman will discuss her photographic series, Spectacle of Nature, which explores our relationship with nature through images of the 2007 Northwest Garden Show in Seattle, Washington. Aaron Forman has always been drawn to the subtle and precise actions of one who is wandering. His series A Space Between depicts individuals engaged in quietly futile acts in an attempt to define and control the spaces they inhabit. Cushman and Forman received their Master of Fine Arts degrees in photography from the University of Oregon, Eugene, in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Justin Colt Beckman: Town and Country
, May 21 - 30, 2008
Opening Reception, Wednesday, May 21, 6:00-8:00 pm

Continuing his ongoing investigation into the unique characteristics of small-town life, Justin Colt Beckman aims to objectively explore and present ideas surrounding the urban/rural dichotomy and its associated stereotypes. Through a variety of visual media, including photo-based works, film/video, sculpture, installation, and new-media, the exhibit explores convergent methods of art-making, while questioning the effects that technology, urban expansion, and globalization have on the "perception" of the urban/rural dichotomy.
