Scott Bailey Conceptual rendering for Virtually Sublime, May 2006

In the installation Virtually Sublime, Scott Bailey utilizes satellite imaging technology as the inspiration for a painting that covers the entire 16' X 53' west wall of Sarah Spurgeon Gallery with a view of Mt. Rainier, 60 miles to the west. Made up of smaller sections of various sizes, shapes, and materials, the image will have been repeatedly fragmented and re-assembled through the digital mapping and painting processes. The work questions whether it is possible to achieve the painter's notion of the sublime in the landscape through contemporary technology.
